King Of Kong Movie

normal people are not friends and collaborators with mr awesome. normal people do not neglect their children to spend countless hours in the garage playing a video game. normal people do not drag their whole family across the country so they can watch him play a video game, and fail at reclaiming the record. the guys whole life as detailed in the movie was one failure after another, failure band, failure pitcher, lost his job, and then failed to beat the score at funspot. finally he sends in a VHS tape with a new high score, which he earlier criticized billy for doing, and then billy beat him again in public. billy seems like a jerk in the movie but he was doing what any good man should do, putting his family first and competing over a video game score a distant second.

wiebe admits in the doc that he collaborated with mr awesome to bring down billys score and to avenge mr awesome with twin galaxies. there is nothing normal about someone who makes an arrangement like that with a person like mr awesome. you can tell something about a man by his choice of friends...

First thing my buddy said when billy's wife appeared was damn look at those tits lol. I was wondering if Billy is that big of a dick? The tape that Billy sent in seemed to be edited and they still excepted it but they didn't except Steve's tape that was perfect in the beginning. This just seemed odd

he must be a big dick to have scored a wife with those fine titties.

also, why would billy edit his tape? he has proven publicly that he is capable of getting a better score than that.

Fairfield, Iowa - July 26, 2007 - Even though he was proclaimed the "Video Game Player of the Century" in Tokyo in 1999, that doesn't stop Billy Mitchell from adding more glory to his legendary reputation. On Friday, July 13, 2007, exactly 25 years after setting the original world record, Billy scored a high-score on the legendary Donkey Kong arcade game that has been verified to be the new world record.

In front of an audience of hundreds, including Twin Galaxies Senior referee Todd Rogers, Mitchell scored 1,050,200 points – a new world record.

I had a chance to meet Steve Wiebe at the Logan's Hardware event in Chicago and then spent the entire next day with him (we went to the Bears/Seahawks playoff game). He is exactly as you see him in the movie. Of the whole day, we spent 100x more time talking sports than talking video games. He doesn't seem much into video games at all, pretty much just Donkey Kong. He probably sees us collectors and fanatics as total retards. One thing that surprised me was that I had heard that Billy was actually a pretty decent guy. I asked Steve about it expecting to hear that, yeah, he was cool. Steve said he was a doosh to him and pretty much treated him like crap any time they have been at the same events. I figured the movie was just edited to make that look more extreme but apparently not.

If you watch my videos from Steve Weibe's Donkey Kong 101 from the NW Pinball and game room show last weekend
In the questions part he is asked about Billy and the King of Kong

I have watched the movie numerous times, and I absolutely love it. The creators/editors of the movie didn't FORCE any of the principals in the movie to say anything. It was their own words. Even editing footage to paint a certain image can only go so far when you are at the mercy of whatever comes out of the mouth of the person being interviewed.

I believe that Steve is a genuinely nice guy. Steve Sanders and his statements about Steve Wiebe (and Billy's look when he does so in front of him) is very telling. And remember, Steve Sanders and Billy have been friends for over 20 years. Sanders was "won over" by Weibe in his dedication and willingness to attempt to challenge Billy head-on. And remember what Billy said to his wife very quietly as he walked through the room while Steve was in his home town in an attempt at having a live showdown/contest? The ONLY obvious character flaw that I see in Weibe is the fact that he would even TALK to Roy Schildt. That guy is fucking WACKO.

I would be interested to meet Billy in person. I'm pretty sure I would have him pegged in just a few minutes. I would know if it was an act or if he is truly as represented in the movie. I get a good laugh at his perception of the success of his hot sauce empire. Gotta love the old minivan he pulls up in when he is warned to Steve was in the family restaurant. He truly IS the best at what he does. He stocked those grocery store shelves full of vinegar based hot sauce with AUTHORITY. I don't need to meet either of the Steves to know what they are like...

the whole thing is just stupid. they set it up so you want to root for the underdog against the big bad bill mitchell, when the fact is billy didnt even have the record when steve beat it in the first place! you wouldnt know it from watching the movie though. you also wouldnt know that billy and steve met prior to the film, including doing interviews together, appearing on stage together, and yes, even playing some head to head donkey kong together on a mame machine at one point. the film makers knew all that, but you wouldnt know it from watching the movie.

you might not know during the part where steve shows up at billys restaurant and they make it look like he is driving away, actually he was parking and he ended up buying steve's meal and his friends, even though they were uninvited guests at a private party. or the part where they insinuate twin galaxies broke into wiebes garage, when the fact is the mother in law invited them in, and when steve got home he unlocked the cab for them to take pics and played a couple games with them.

had they not made that visit they never wouldve seen the box indicating wiebe got his donkey kong board from mr awesome. no shit that was going to make them suspicious! the reason they were distrustful at first is equally obvious - they knew billy and his scores were authentic because people have witnessed his skills firsthand at many titles over the years. wiebe was an unknown entity, and when they found that he was a collaborator with mr awesome, well, what would any rational person think? at the very least it would merit some extra attention i would think.

I like the movie and kind of like everybody in it. Like somebody else was saying, Billy is like the "bad guys" in wresting. Steve is portrayed as super innocent and naive. Steve Saunders is a stand up guy. Brian Kugh is just a dick. I'm sure all of it is a shade of the truth (except the Brian Kugh part, what a dick!)

Hank Chein is the man anyway when it comes to Kong. I wonder whether he made Billy's wife's boobs? Things that make you go "hmmmmm."

Anyway, the Kong Off did prove a lot to me. That was Billy's home turf as far as I'm concerned. I was actually expecting him to take it. It came down to Weibe and Chein and Chein pulled it out the last minute. Pretty sweet.

No matter what one thinks of Wiebe or Mitchell, there can be no doubt that Kuh comes off as petty and sniveling:

For giggles read Brian Kuh's Wikipedia history. Criminally, the entry fails to mention his kill-screen catch-phrase.

I think it's obvious that Brian Kuh's job, whether it was assigned to him or not, was to ramp up as much pressure as possible ("playing mind games") as the kill screen neared for Wiebe. I love how life has ways of undoing the efforts of people like this--and turn them around 180°. Wiebe said that he was very fatigued from the travel and lack of sleep--that he was a "zombie"... but that the crowd around him gave him new energy to finish that game.

As far as those of us here--yes, regardless of what we might think, feel, or actually BE, most outside this world will consider us part of a weird fringe group, social outcasts, and nerds. The movie clips of game enthusiasts did give me pause. That dude who refers to "DDG's" (drop dead gorgeous) girls hanging around arcades and his comment that "even a fricken nun games." Um, wow. The comments from Walter Day that he played games to attract girls--"my, I see that you're good at Centepede." The dude who says "I don't smoke, I don't drink, I don't use drugs. I play video games!" Those things made me cringe a little. But this was a movie and is entertainment.

That's fine with me--let 'em think what they want. This isn't my only group of friends and I'm sure that's the case with everybody else here. Like you guys, I have other passions; I moderate an NFL football forum and know a few players and their families. I build race cars, etc. And I'm not in the least embarassed to hang with the gamers and arcade restoration experts here. I think you guys and this place are cool.

The point? When you pidgeonhole anybody, you're going to be wrong a lot more than you're right. I wish I could spend some time with Billy Mitchell. I'm sure he's both a "son of a gun" and also has personal dynamics that I'd admire aside from his gaming skills. I haven't met him but I have met Steve Wiebe. I'm sure like all of us he's a mix of traits. Passions that lead to excellence in most fields come at some price. He may not be the Ward Cleaver of fathers/husbands but he's loved and supported by his family. That's good enough for me.

Looks like someone updated Brian's Wikipedia page:

"He is currently irrelevant, however he once uttered the phrase, "Guys there's a kill screen coming up.""

LOL
