Kinda Sad Arcade 'News'

Fuck, I remember when this thread was new!

We've been hanging in there though.

I went through a "too much shit" phase around 2017 and sold a boat load of stuff and my arcade sat dormant for about a year, half empty. It was depressing. Then I caught the bug again with the new Golden Tee hardware and picked up a Wonka pin and it all came back. 2020 was annoying, but I feel like I'll be able to have another party in the summer 2021 again. And MGC will be here in November before you know it.

What I really miss of late is the camaraderie of just hanging out with like-minded buddies shotting the shit about the hobby. Things have gotten too virtual lately. Need more "real."

Holy shit, thank you! I just fired up the first clip and was instantly transported back again. What's weird is now I'm being transported back in time in layers. I used to sit in my old office 15+ years ago and listen to these 20-25 year old recordings and reminisce. Later I'd sit in my new office about 10 years ago and listen to these 30 year old recordings and reminisce. Now I'm reminiscing about sitting in my office 10 and 15 years ago listening to these now 40 year old recordings. Oh well I guess you can't stop time and just listening to these sounds makes me happy, so thanks.
this was just my thought an hr ago, nested nostalgia from 2011, referencing early 2000s with a BITD wetware memory core. These sounds sync me to the past like a half turn around a flyback. Love it.

I vaguely remember this thread and the people in it. Mostly I long for the old forum where Phetishboy's avatar had the correct aspect ratio. Looking at "Wei Scie" drives me insane.

I just saw this thread for the first time. I never knew he sold his games way back when. I remember first finding his website with the arcade game ambiance CDs years ago. Still can't believe it was that long ago. I would listen to them at work and then I happily paid for his CDs. Anyone who had the foresight back in the 80's to record arcades like he did deserved the money in my opinion. I loved his CDs and even the commentary from him and his friends, definitely brought me back. I still have his CD, I should bust it out and give it a spin for old times sake.

First time I have heard these so appreciate the bump and soundcloud link. Heard this kid asking "how many more lives you have?" definitely takes you back. The dialogue is awesome.

Defintely a blast from the past. I must have visited his site a million times BITD and remember seeing that he got rid of a majority of his collection. I did the same thing with a cassette recoreder but of course never kept them like Dan. I have to capture those sound clips and make them into MP3s. Sometimes things happen for a reason that leads you down another path and your happier for it.

Don't recall this thread. But I've been reading through it for the last 1/2 hour. I've been in this hobby for years and have really enjoyed it. Lots of ups and downs, but once I found this site, I realized there are tons of collectors out there and so many are so generous with their time and knowledge and want to help people repair their games.

also great reading about how there are so many other things in our lives to enjoy. Make me curious to see how many other hobbies our fellow collectors have out there.

I also think it's important for newbies (myself included) to get educated and learn how to do some repairs. This would have been near impossible 30 years ago.. but we have the world at our fingertips, and once you install that 1st cap kit, you gain so much self confidence, you'll go forward with wanting to learn more.

1000 thanks for everyone who's been so willing to share all their talents. Sure makes this hobby more enjoyable. And there's the realization that you're not alone in the game that you haven't fixed yet.. happens to ALL OF US.
✌🏻
And be well my fellow collectors .

Balance is key for sure
Whenever I hear someone getting out I at least tell them to keep their favorite game and maybe they will play it later or at least a memento they can enjoy.
Recently a kid inherited an ice cold beer from his grandfather, it's easy to go for the quick sale but later he might have wanted the game back or even to remind him of his pops, and I'm sure whenever that will be the game will surely become more expensive then it already is.
very good topic here and it's nice to read the honest answers.

It's kinda weird isn't it? I was looking through some old pics, and found images of Ralph Baer's stuff. He was at a show we went to, brought some of his old electronics projects with him and did a panel. We were there for nostalgia, and now I'm kinda nostalgic for that time.

We went to 3 or 4 shows a year for almost 10 years, most were primarily for console collectors but there were almost always a few arcade games there too.

Interesting thread.....listened to some of the sounds and brought me back to hearing all the games at work and kind of drove me nuts for the first month or two....then in one ear and out the other.

I've had balance... But still have reduced my collection by 25% so far in the last few weeks.

Didnt the flyer guy sell the flyer website as well, perhaps to Greg?

Yes, and there had been some promises that TAFA would continue being maintained and updated. Then Greg went through many years of not adding any more scans, so due to general frustration (and seller's remorse?) Dan created FlyerFever.com. For what it's worth, Dan usually posts on MAMEWorld.info News when he updates FlyerFever.com (he still does!), dunno about other places.

Thank you SO much for reminding me of this. I had these years ago and somehow lost the files. (HD crash, IIRC)

Much excite!

So accurate. I wondered the other day why I even keep all these games. I'd probably be happy with only 5. I keep getting that urge to purge. That being said I have a game getting delivered on Wednesday.......

Obvious necro bump as @Phetishboy reminded us about Dan in coinrejects thread. I am curious if anyone knows if Dan ever published the rest of his audio tapes?
>>edit>>seems there is an issue sharing soundcloud links. user-181200061

I can't believe this thread is almost 10 years old. Does anyone know what happened to the guy that made all those recordings? The Shanman said he was living in the same town, but I haven't seen HIM on these forms for years either. Better yet, does anyone have any of this guy's recordings on MP3 they could share with me? I clicked on the link to his old site, but it looks like it's gone now.
I was off klov for quite a while, somewhat inactive in the hobby. A while back I realized I had missed out on some cool repro'ed parts and started lurking since it doesn't take that much time to peruse new posts.

Society these days.

I regularly play the ambience mp3's in the game room (I know they're not the subject here).

HighCriteria TotalRecorder on Windows will record sounds playing on your computer. I've used this for many years to scrape stuff.
