Sorry for the off topic post and in the wrong section but it's kind of an emergency. I have a server here that won't boot and has a TON of bad caps on the mainboard. The server is for a collection agency and runs their entire phone system.

The cap on the board are 10v 1600uf...i have a bunch of 10v 3300uf. I thought I remember somewhere that you can got up in uf but not down..

I guess the question is can I use the 3300 to replace the 1600s?

normally you can go up in voltage not capacity if the cap physically will fit there, I have in the past gone up in uf 25-50% but not 100%+ like you are asking.

i know how you feel, i have some older motherboards that need new caps all around and its hard to find replacements

You have to be careful when it comes to computer motherboards. Those filter circuits are kinda sensitive. I've tried using the wrong parts before, and never had good luck. Best bet, find the right parts - either scavenge them from a junk motherboard with caps that look good, or find a local electronics store with the right part. Or, you can order them from Mouser overnight.

Damn.. great idea...we got a bunch of boards around here.

These peeps are buying a new server from us so they only need something for a couple days while the new one get confirgured

lol..so here what Happened..I used the 3300UF and the machine booted..for about 1 minute...then fire...then smoke...

SO the answer is no.. dont used them

Ugh. Sorry... I tried to warn you... :D

I should have really mentioned the time I did the same thing and the regulator transistors blew in a puff of smoke.

Like I said, I've not had good luck using the wrong parts on a computer motherboard.

Actually it looks like the cap blew up..it was in an isolated area and should be savable.

Not sure what kind of phone system it was..just a 5+ year older server with a bunch of proprietary PCI cards in it.

damn place smells terrible =)

I got a guy gonna pick up some caps locally and give it another shot...at least the machine booted which is more than it did before the meltdown

Hmm if the cards are made by Digium, then it would be Asterisk. If they're..Dialogic, it could be another system like a Comdial or a voicemail system.

NO NO NO NO NO!

Order the right parts from Mouser.com!

You need LOW-ESR style caps!!! Standard caps won't work right.

Really? Nobody's commented on this yet?

Ha Ha! Back when Sprint and I were embattled in a dispute over their craptacular coverage and me paying a cancellation charge (I refused) they turned me over to collections.

Unfortunately the caps never failed on their phone server motherboards :-(
