so i'm looking to get ki or ki2. probably just a board as the dedicated cabs tend to go for more than i'd like and i really dont have the space for another giant midway cab.

but i've noticed the prices for ki1 are higher than ki2. why?

is it because ki1 boards can be converted to ki2 and thus have more value in terms of quantity, or do people just like ki1 better?

i've only really played the console ones to any extent (mostly gold) so i'd like to hear some other people's opinions.

I dont know what it is, I try and play the game so much but I just cant get into it. To some people its the only game they play. I just don't get it. Would love a KI1 board though. I played 2 but only a handful of times

KI2's fighting engine is way superior and deep than the engine used in KI1, but people prefer KI1 simply because its more 'iconic'. It was the first game that used those kind of pre-rendered graphics, so it has that iconic feel, and thats why people prefer ki to ki2.

I like 2 much better too. The first one was more groundbreaking and can be converted to 2 so that is probably why. I am sure many of these got converted so they are harder to find.

If you go here:

You can see some technical info about the two games. And if you click on the game logos at the top, you can go to pages for each game and check gameplay and stuff that might help you decide...

KI2 is the ultimate button masher, I don't think I have ever pressed buttons so fast in a fighting game. Love it. There is a rhythm to the game's combos. I always play as Orchid or Kim Woo. Jago is pretty fun too, but not as rhythmic as Orchid, almost like a dance.

This isn't me:

I love them both but KI would be the winner if I could only have one.

I just wish i could find a KI1 board! I've been looking for one for like a year now :S There's one dude on ebay who's been trying to sell the same one for months at the amusing pricetag of 300$ .. Ugh!

Expect to pay 200+ for a known good working board. They are not cheap. Sometimes you get lucky and find one that someone is selling for cheap cause they don't know it's worth more but that is rare on these boards.

As for converting KI1 to a KI2 board there is more to it than just swapping roms and HD. You need the controller pcb board that connects to the IDE ribbon cable. That piece is very very hard to find on it's own.

Really? Only groundbreaking for it's time.

Yeah, I liked them when i was 10 years old, but I just don't see any draw to them now besides nostalgia.

It's just that there are so many good 2D fighting games, if its anything besides nostalgia I guess I just don't understand :)

But anyway, I shouldn't come in a KI thread and bash the game, just a bit perplexed

It's probably supply vs demand. Most KI1 boards were converted to KI2. There's probably just not many KI1 boards left. Even if you can find a KI2 conversion, finding the KI1 sound roms aren't the easiest thing in the world either. I just picked up a cheap KI2 conversion that I'll be rolling back to KI1. Anyone have a burner that they'd set me up with some KI1 sound roms?
