I have two problems, first no sound, sound test says bad u?? chips, several come up bad ram.. And it resets afer i try to start game, freezes first..I suspect a bad hard drive.

First, test your +5v and make sure its holding slightly above 5. Make sure all the roms are seated.
If you have mame you can use chdman utility to dump the hard drive and verify the drive is working. You can use this utility to copy the chd to compact flash also. You will need an updated boot rom to run the CF card.
BTW, if your hard drive fails on KI it will usally say "danger, danger" when booted.

considering my long history with this game, I strangely enough have never seen what can happen during a hard drive failure.

just to give you a background on this, all the graphics and video elements you see are stored on the hard drive. the roms are only there for sound, the only exception is the U98 rom, which is the actual game code rom. the hard drive should it ever have like a file system error or a hardware failure will certainly cause random freezes and resets, because the game will have an expectation for a file to load, and if it doesn't, it'll just give up and quit.

as Riptor said, check your +5 voltage, if it's a dedicated KI and it has the grey Peter Chou power supply, chances are that thing might be failing on you too. (been seemingly talking about those for a lot of different games lately).

the reason this is significant is because the hard drive is powered through the game board -- if the drive experiences a voltage drop, it'll cause an abrupt power down and when the voltage goes back to a normal level the drive will come back on.

rom errors can also come up due to low voltage because they need 5V to operate properly.

let me know what roms are coming up with errors, I have some extra ones from dead boards I used to have that I can send with the stuff you bought.

Also, whats the history on the boardset and hard drive your using? Were they purchased together? I have bought several KI boards off ebay which simply had the wrong boot roms on it. I even got one once that had the eprom jumper set to 8 meg roms. Moving the jumper to the correct location netted me a working KI for 20 bucks. Im not saying your problem is something simple like that but always check these things because sometimes you get lucky.

Uh... If it has bad RAM it could lock up...

Check the power supply level as mentioned... but also check if you have an oscilloscope to see if you have a bunch of trash on the +5v line. If you do, replace the power supply.

If not... replace the RAM then try again.

Hard drive issues won't cause the RAM to show bad.
