Am getting five tones on powering on a Killer Instinct board - screen is filled with white horizontal lines. Am guessing this is indicating a failed RAM, but which one does five tones indicate?

Can't seem to find anything in any documentation.

Edit - found them:

0 Tones - Check Hardware
1 Tone - All OK
2 Tones - Bad U10 Checksum
3 Tones - Bad U11 Checksum
4 Tones - Bad U12 Checksum
5 Tones - Bad U13 Checksum
6 Tones - Bad U33 Checksum
7 Tones - Bad U34 Checksum
8 Tones - Bad U35 Checksum
9 Tones - Bad U36 Checksum
10 Tones - Ram Test Failed

In this case it was U13 that was corrupted - replaced that with a newly programmed 27C040 and it now boots with the normal single tone but the screen is still full of horizontal white lines. Connections on the main IC (with the heatsink) are all good. Hmmm.

Yeah, those white lines, but mine have solid black between them (while yours has other garbage between them).

Thanks for the pointer.

cool i guess you know what those lines mean then from the other posts. good stuff.

Not yet, haven't had the time to read though all the posts yet. :)

Just out of interest, if the boot ROM is removed from a fully working board, what is displayed on the screen?

reading is fun-damental! or something like that.

Personally i've never tried running the board sans boot rom, I only have one non working KI right now and it's not a standard board.

IIRC tho someone mentioned not having the right boot rom in and it just wouldn't boot. Wish i could be more help on this one for ya.

Replace U98 with a known working one. It's somewhat easy to install that rom backwards and in doing so it cooks the chip and generates the same white line pattern.

I'm leaning towards no U98 maybe doing the same thing. .. but probably a black screen?

Thanks, tried that but no luck.

I'm guessing that no/faulty U98 SHOULD give a solid white or black screen.

Probably popped some solder on the CPU. Common problem on these.

Already checked the pins a few times (I use a fine needle to gently push on them from the sides), they're all fine. Also checked pins on other SMT chips. Beginning to suspect that the CPU is at fault.
