I picked another KI, cabinet looks great, control panel needs some cleaning, game plays and sounds great. BUT...

The picture is fuzzy, blurry... It was that way when I bought it. But get this, today when I plugged it in it started out looking pretty good. For a minute there, I was grinning from ear to ear. Then it starting getting fuzzy. It took about a minute.

So is it the monitor? Is it the board? Any common issues i should look for?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

flyback on the monitor could be going out, try adjusting the pot labeled "Focus" on the flyback. if it clears up then gets worse again i'd say it's flyback time.

If it still has the polo in it, it is probably the flyback.

Yea the focus adjustment isn't doing anything. Haven't messed with a flyback before.
I'll have to do some searches on how to work on it.

there's a sweet spot it'll get bad if you turn it to far in either direction, but yea if you can't get it to focus at all no matter where you set it, definitely flyback time.

So I'm still trying to identify what monitor I have. The tube has an RCA sticker on the back of it. Chassis has a sticker that says manufactured november 1994.

Serial numbers on chassis and tube match.

Where can I find the model number? Do I have to pull it?

The only hack i found is that there is a wire splice done on a orange wire coming off the neck board, that ties into a white wire then tied into a black wire that goes around the tube. Ground maybe. I need to do some more investigating. I'll take some pics.

sounds like a polo they used RCA tubes iirc while the Wells used Zenith. snap a picture of it or if there looks like a metal cage around parts of the chassis i'd bet my money on a polo also.

here's a pic of a polo chassis:

That flyback is the original and needs to be replaced. SOMETIMES, the focus pin can get bent when people put the neckboard back on. I would check to see if the focus pin (the one inside the neck that's surrounded by the plastic) is bent. You say that adjusting the focus knob on the fly does nothing. My money's on a bad flyback or a bent focus pin.

K7000 with white knob flyback = change ASAP. Its not if it fails but how soon.

this. I have a K7000 with a hole in it in my room at work because of this lol. the tragedy was that I was able to fix the damn thing, and when I pulled it to test another chassis on a tube, it never worked again after that.

should say P538 or P447 iirc in the middle of the chassis (or something like that lol).

So I've never done a cap kit or a fly back before. Can't decide wether or not to do it myself or pay someone to do it.

Anyone know somebody in DFW that works on monitors?

I agree with the focus pin suggestion, remove the neckboard and make sure the pin at the very end (the one by itself) isn't bent up or missing or something. Also check the wire that connects to the socket and make sure it's still connected. Flyback probably needs replaced too, but usually they don't just completely lose the ability to focus at all, it just gets pretty blurry.

Do it yourself. Get yer hands dirty & enjoy the hobby. It's not that hard.
By doing it yourself you'll learn & gain a new skill set. If it doesn't work, then pay someone to show you where you went wrong.

Give it a shot. If it does come out good. I swear you'll be proud of yourself on the accomplishment.

Again, enjoy the hobby.

My 1st attempt I failed, but leaned. Now I'm doing them to all my monitors.

if you do it now before you go toasting half the chassis, it won't be bad at all.

if you wait for the flyback to go pop you're looking at changing a lot more.

in the very least, if you care to learn about how to do it properly, you can eliminate a lot of the guesswork from previous owners molesting it and do it right lol

I'm always up for putting in the flyback and caps for you if you like. Let me know if you try and fail or just want someone to do it for you. Just send me a PM to let me know.
