Helping someone out with a Killer Instinct I and suspect the hard drive is crashed. It wasn't getting good voltages, so I replaced the switcher and now one of the two LEDs on the PCB lights and I hear the loud "dong". However, the monitor displays only solid white (only started this after the switcher was replaced). Every once in a while I will hear a clanking/scraping noise that I believe is the hard drive. :(

I tried disconnecting the hard drive and I get the same response, except the second LED lights.

Anyone successfully converted a KI1 over to CF or SD (please provide details of the exact parts used). If anyone sells these kits already made-up and plug-n-play, even better, since I need it ASAP.

This page has eveything you need to know to do the conversion.
http://www.revisionx.com/ki.html

You need a CF to laptop ide adapter, NEW cf 256mb card and a ribbon cable(can be removed from your old drive. I use the CF adapters that have a female socket so it plugs right into the pcb without a ribbon cable.
If you dont want to mess with it yourself you can buy complete kits off ebay for about $35.

That's great. Thanks!

Unfortunately, adding the replacment CF kit/card did not change anything about the KI working. It still does the "bong" sound, shows a total white screen and nothing else (doesn't go into diagnostics from what I can tell). There are no games sounds, etc. I tried it in another cabinet and got the same results, verified voltages and tried another JAMMA PCB in the KI cabinet and it worked.

Anyone have any ideas of what to troubleshoot on the PCB or have a working KI PCB to sell me?

talking about the one with the white line patterns?

that means either your boot rom (the U98) is bad OR your board is bad.

if you can't dump a new U98 rom, RevisionX is capable of doing it. if you just buy the CF kit from him, he gives you the Any-IDE boot rom to replace your old one with.

No, the screen is totally white with no video trash of any kind. I did replace the U98 with the ANY-IDE boot ROM from RevisionX (the original boot ROM at U98 yielded the same white screen). Any other way to test this PCB or should I assume it is just bad? Anyone repair these for a reasonable amount? I know I can buy new, but I am trying not to rack-up a large bill for the person.

sounds like your friend has a bad board then. :(

getting a working KI1 was the most depleting experience I had with my arcade collecting. that was back when there was NOTHING on ebay, you'll find a lot of stuff on there now, but the markup is huge. from time to time you'll find lots where it'll be an all-blue or all-red screen, and they'll advertise it as "tested, not working", but anyone in pursuit of such a game knows that's a good board with a bad drive, so it'll be a "sleeper" until about the last 10 minutes, then the price skyrockets.

I bought my board from quarterarcade.com, then I got a 2nd one on here. you could ask around on here and do way better on price, or you could gamble on ebay. I've seen sets go for $300-400 on there though.

Thanks for the info. I have been speaking to them and for $300 or $400 that KI will get converted to something else! Too bad, since it's a dedicated cabinet and in pretty good condition. $100 is reasonable while $300-$400 is way, way too much.

Please don't let them convert that game. You could send the pcb off for repair. There are people that can do it. It probably has a bad solder joint on one of the custom processors. That is a VERY common problem with these pcbs. And a tech will only charge around $75 an hour. I sent one off and it cost me $75 plus return shipping because they went right to resoldering the processor and now it works 100%

If you have a good, reliable and fairly speedy source to repair the KI PCBs, please PM me and I'll pass on the info. Thanks.

I should've done this. :(

quite certain it was one of those Altera chips on mine. CPU still generated heat, means I THINK it was "thinking" but who knows. other common problem is people try taking the heatsinks off the main CPU and with the super thin legs on the chip they wind up ripping the whole chip off.

I'll stick to ICs and transistors, leave the surface mount stuff for the truly masterful ones. :)

my cab was a conversion. sideart got chewed up a bit when I was stripping the paint off. so Spinal has black fragments in his face.

I am open to suggestions if someone knows someone reliable to fix these PCBs. Speak-up.

I had Mike at Arcade services do mine. I've had him do several pcbs including a F*cked up KI2. He does tell you that it is about a 50/50 chance he can repair a KI1 since the components are no longer available. Though he can redo the processor soldering.

Got mine working 100% though.

Ping!

Anywhere know where to get the KI PCB repaired? If not, this KI will get converted or traded for a working game. Will not pay $300 for a PCB when a conversion kit wouldn't be too much more. The rest of the KI works fine!

You can try Channelmaniac he's a member here so you can search for him and send him a PM or print out the form on his site and mail him the board. Heck he might have one he could sell you.

Thanks for the pr0ps!

I don't have one of the boards in stock but would be happy to look at your board and see if it's a soldering problem on one of the chips.
