Howdy yall!!,
Does anyone out there know FOR SURE what color/type sticks were used as well as the buttons? I have a great restore going on and am going for 100% original and want it looking brand spanking. I'm going to need to start looking for the NOS asap. Thanks

As far as I know the original HAPP buttons that were on it were a lighter blue than is available now. Might have to try to find some old KI ones and clean them up. Or buy some new ones and leave them in the sun for a few months...

They used Happ comps with the heavy spring. I think they are the old style though which may now be the IL Eurosticks. Not sure.

Just like on the flyer: blue sticks and blue buttons except for white start buttons. Not sure of the exact type of stick but part # in the manual is "20-10178-3".

The flyer and manual say blue sticks and blue buttons. But assembly line did black sticks and blue buttons. Also the start buttons were plain white.

eBay seller tornadoterrys.com has them. Also on his web page. He sells it as a kit, just specify what colors you want cause his kit is based of the manual

Both of the KI cabs I've owned have had blue sticks originally. I took some new blue buttons I had and compared them to the original buttons on my KI. The old blue is definitely lighter but you probably won't notice unless you have them side by side.

Thanks everyone. It has the original buttons still and they are in good shape, just need cleaning. My cab was converted to KI2 at the factory I believe. When I peeled off the CPO and front "killer Instinct" sticker the original front art and CPO were perfect!! never touched!! The sticks may have been for a KI2....cause one is red and one is black. They look cool enough and are in good shape...does anyone know bout that?

blue sticks blue buttons, but the blue is maybe a robin egg blue, or carolina panther blue-ish.

i laugh at any killer instincts without the original blue sticks/buttons!

god ...everyone seems to be SURE of something different....I'm thinking the blue. More research....I have noticed differences between flyers and the actual product a lot of the time photos of the mach up are used to make ads while the product was starting production. I want to be sure....but then again who could tell :)

Well, the sticks were blue in the flyer but most machines had black ones installed I think. Mine were black when I bought it but I replaced them with blue.

I've owned 3 of em, dedicated. All had black joys. This game is my grail, I loved it. I don't think I ever played one with blue joysticks.

If the blue stick version from the flyer exists, which we have established, it would make sense that they're indeed the original, and either ops switched them out for black sticks when they "broke", or midway ran out of the blue sticks and so later runs had standard black sticks

ctozzi has owned like 30 of them...let's ask him...

I too am looking to order me up some more buttons, but I just can't tell from pictures if those Happ ones are the same color blue.

KI didn't use Happ parts. the Happ buttons are distinctly different from what the game came with, which were iL parts. the joysticks it came with were also noticeably inferior to the iL Eurosticks/Happ Competition joysticks that are available now. those "kits" you find on ebay are conceived by total noobs lol

I was able to scrounge up enough of the original buttons looming inside my cab (which was a Tekken 3 conversion only using 4 buttons on each side) and bought Happ Competition joysticks. the game controls are SIGNIFICANTLY better than any of the machines I played circa 1995-2001.

the joysticks I've seen were always blue. mine are blue. my KI2 on the other hand still had the original joysticks which were a much deeper blue than the Happ Comps I have. those were such horrible joysticks in that though, those had to go immediately lol

These are the correct lighter color that everyone is talking about:

Back in the 90's, buttons and sticks sold by Happ were made by IL. Later, Happ went to a different manufacturer (China, maybe?). All the KI's I played in my teens used the above sticks and buttons, FWIW.

yeah, Happ does that... are Cherry switches still made or do they just not sell them anymore? I heard something about them getting too expensive and Happ went with those E-switches instead.

20-9687-3 Blue Pushbutton can be found here:

They also used to have the 20-9687-2 White Pushbutton but it's now out of stock.

Just adding that my KI has blue sticks, blue action buttons and white start buttons without any logos on them.

Just stumbled on this thread and it got me worked up a bit. For years I had insisted in separate conversions with different people about the original KI sticks and buttons being a lighter color blue than what we find today with Happ/iL parts. I tried to find these when I got my KI cab almost 5 years ago and found nothing that resembled what I had remembered from my childhood. So I bought 2 sets of buttons and sticks from Happ/iL for this cabinet along with a KI2 later on which I never ended up getting.

Fast forward to last year and a KI cab that my friend purchased. For the first time in 15 years I saw the buttons that I remembered seeing. After discovering these I consulted someone in this thread and he insisted that they were originally Happ/iL's even though I saw these lighter buttons that I remembered from my childhood.

Fast forward to today and PART NUMBER 20-9687-3 BLUE PUSHBUTTON!!!! These are without a doubt the buttons which were used in the original cabs and are the same ones that I saw on my friend's KI cabinet which I hadn't seen in a decade and a half.

Fast forward to 5 minutes ago and me TEARING MY F*CKING HAIR OUT because the listed supplier is out of stock. I imagine these will never be seen again of course.

And for the record, any KI's with black sticks were replaced by operators or the supply of blues simply ran out. I've never seen a KI with black sticks in my life. Also, there is no color difference between the iL and Happ sticks that Paradise Arcade is selling currently and the same holds true for the buttons. I have however seen a difference in Happ/iL colors from different time periods. Probably changed material suppliers at some point.

Damn, this post was way too long.

for the record, the Happ Competition joysticks I pulled out were a slightly darker shade of blue than my IL Eurosticks.

<-- Competition is the mounted one and the Euro's laying flat

as you'll notice in my top picture, the new Eurosticks match the original IL buttons perfectly.

and as far as quality and performance goes, the Eurostick embarrasses the Competition.

Hmmm. I actually encountered one of those lighter sticks but it was a Happ stick instead of iL. And my Happ sticks are the same as your Eurosticks, so basically the inverse of your experience. So the way it seems to me is basically a luck of the draw as far as colors go since I've now seen the lighter color of both.
