Hi All,

I have recently bought an old Killer instinct cab. Its not working at the moment, the PSU has blown, maybe the board is damage too. however i want to do a really good job and restore it to its former glory, i have found a number of places that sell the marquee and side art however the side art seems to be a lot of money for what it actually is... gameongraphix sell it for almost $200 does any one have some alternate suggestions?

If i could get the high res images i could print them in the UK for a no more than £20.

Secondly the actual cab has seen some stick over the years and has various divits and chips, mainly on the edge were the rubber trim goes round. whats the best way to repair this? what is the wood coated in? it doesn't look like paint. does it touch up ok..

what do you guys suggest?

you just wouldnt get decent side art from scans you get of the artwork, the porinters probably wouldnt give you best quality either, even though it sounds like a lot, shop around and get a good site like mamemarquees who can print you nice quality product.

the sides if they are not painted will probably be vinyl or perhaps laminate,i aint familiar with this cab.

the rubber round the edges is called tmolding, you can remove it by pulling it off working from one end to the other one.dont rip it out like a mad man,you can also buy replacement tmolding from tmolding.com.
:)

thanks for the reply, game on grafix sell what they call reproduction art. how do i know it will be good, and or bad?

i did look at mamemarquees, they are now called game on grafix and the only place i can find that does the KI art, other than ebay but they are double the price there.

Ill have a look at the cab and see if i can tell if its vinyl. ill upload a pic. if this is the case what is the best way to repair.

I got an email back from Scott @ GameOnGrapix / Mamemarquee. he says the KI reproduction side arts are scans rather than original vector images.

Does anyone have any suggestions of an alternative?

Cheers

It would be interesting to see some image of your cab: sometimes sidearts are not so damaged and could be better to keep the arts as they are, without the need to replace them ;)

really...

you sure its just not different in the UK to states?

Even inside the unit there is a large metal enclosure that hold the jamma board, also as part of this cage is a caddy for the hard disk. if its not the dedicated seems like a elaborate solution if its not.

Pretty gutted. watched some videos on youtube and noticed some other subtle differences. the cab is squared off under the control panel nintendo logo, mine are rounded. should i be annoyed? for £150 everything works.

I was going to mention the artwork. This game could have been sold as a conversion kit that might have included artwork for a specific cab conversion. I've never seen a dedicated cab other than the U.S. version ones of these games. I wouldn't be too upset about what you paid for it. Games are harder to come across over there and the board alone would is probably worth about 66% of what you paid for that cab.

Thanks guys,

Would you suggest i restore as is, or try make the cab look more 'authentic' ?, or hunt for an authentic cab? maybe there is no point restoring a none factory machine?

Would be interesting if a UK owner of a UK version could confirm. ill have a good look round inside and update with pictures.

I'd still clean it up as nice as you could maybe repaint the sides black and find you some conversion side art to put on there Great game and I think you still got a good deal on it

Im with you... problem is ill always no its not factory. think ill keep my eyes peeled. atleast if all the hardware works i can use it for spares. think ill use it to lean about how things work etc.

looking at the coin slot front it does look like a few midway mortal kombat 2 type cabs. though looking on the museum the US one looks different to the UK one..

Hmmmm

further investigation required

if you see this UK mk2 cab for sale, its the same cab as mine.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150444989475&_trksid=p2759.l1259#ht_1202wt_1167

could it be that in the a generic cab was used for midway games in the UK...

That could be the UK dedicated cab. The Killer Instinct you have could have been a converted MK cab. Are there any labels or stickers on the back of the cab?

i have taken some more pictures. nothing obvious other than a serial number for a company called Deith Leisure.

I have emailed them to see if they have any history on the cab etc.

in the mean time i have uploaded some more pictures

i have been offered a midway war gods cab (dedicated) cheap. would you guys suggest getting this cab and restoring it to KI, so my ki is a proper faithfull restore?

im not fussed about war gods, its a bab game.

Sounds like a waste of time/effort/money to me to put the KI guts in another Midway cabinet. The cabinet you have now is very close and will look just fine after being cleaned up.

That mk2 on ebay looks to be dedicated but its definitely different than the U.S. version. Never saw one with a front end like that. Pretty cool.
