Hey Guys,

My KI2 will boot up just fine and look all purdy, then a few minutes into game play I start getting these glitch lines streaking down the screen vertically. They're annoying and they need to go away.

I guess my only question is, could this be a hard drive connection issue and not the board? Repairs on this thing is pretty difficult right? I seem to recall that from past research...

Thanks in advance!

Clean before pic, then another one after about 5 minutes of playing.

it's either going to be the RAMs or potentially broken pins on the CPU, I don't know. there's some other surface mount chips that can be bad too.

I'm leaning towards it being a board issue. unless you run the hard disk test and it comes up with a substantial amount of errors.

Looks Boardish to me also. If you want to have it repaired i recommend chad @ Arcadecup.com

Small possibility that it's the power supply, but probably the board yeah.

Check to see what the voltage is when it first comes on, then after it messes up, re check it and see if it's dropped or raised significantly. It'll be on the 5v.

good call, I'll give it a try. This might be a good reason to convert this back to an original Killer Instinct though

here's a silly question what does your board look like? specifically where the ide cable is. you might have a KI1 converted to KI2 if there's a daughter board between the main and ide cable.

Not a silly question at all, because I think you're right. Is this the daughterboard?

Also, what does this change, if anything?

And personally, thank you, Broodwich for investing so much into this project of mine. Truly thankful!

That little pcb was required to convert KI1 to KI2. You can easily convert it back by removing the daughterboard, replacing the HD, and all eproms. You essentially will have everything you need to play both KIs once you acquire the other KI1 parts.

which would be awesome! so long as the board ain't hosed. Gonna try and check power supply and edge connector tonight

Sometimes Silly questions are #Winning. :D KI1 is my all time favorite and grail of a game it's no problem at all.

wow. fired up the cabinet this evening and got nothing but a blue screen. Neither of the red LEDs on the board lit up. Is this a hard drive failure?

It's possible - another possibility could very well be some loose legs on any of the million chips. You can try applying slight pressure on a chip at a time and hitting the reset to see if you get different results. These boards flex very easily and can pop those microscopic legs up from the solder very easily.

yeah, I said bad RAM. lol

solid blue screen CAN indicate a drive failure............... just not on KI2. KI2 would give you a red screen instead.

the CPU (chip with heatsink) is usually the cause of this. gently press down on it while you power the game up, it'll loop over and over trying to catch if I recall, if you have a broken leg in there and pushing down on it makes the game work again, then you're gonna need some surgery done to that board.

nice call Mecha! So I either need to learn surface mount soldering or pass this along. bummer.

I saw on another thread where someone thought it might've been the boot chip. If I convert this back to KI1 that might fix it, eh?

that's another plausible, but unlikely scenario. if your boot rom was in fact bad, the game wouldn't even run like you had it before.

typically it'll create that white line pattern instead of the blue screen too.

Chad from arcadecup fixes these, if Brood failed to mention it he's not doing his job. ;) j/k

you're probably looking at an SRAM replacement and a multitude of surface mount rework. let Chad do it, don't be a dumbass like I was and attempt to do this on your own. :p

its funny, i put it in test mode via dip switch, tested the cpu first thing and it tested perfect. I had done it via test button on coin door last time.

eventually, the glitches came back up when i reset it.

Noticed that the huge pc fan isn't connected to the 120v from the psu. Could this lack of cooling cause the cpu to overheat and bug out like this?

Sorry, i'm fighting the cost of repairs! =\

If you do decide to convert back to KI1 I have a kit on ebay for 80 shipped, but if you save me the ebay fees I can only charge 70 shipped. It includes all the sound roms and the boot rom plus harddrive

No slacking here it's in my signature :D and yes my vote goes for chad, it takes a while tho but good things come from patience.

I'm thinking the reason it's showing blue screen is because it's still a KI1 board but just with the k2 conversion.

That fan should be hooked up DEFINITELY! It doesn't do a lot for short periods of time on but if left on for say over an hour or two it definitely does it's job.
