My ki2 board has never booted. It was a give me board. First off when you boot it beeps then comes up to a scrambled screen and thats it. I've read that a bad boot rom can cause this. I replaced the boot rom. Same issue. Next I hit reset button on the board. The board gives 4 beeps then back to the scrambled screen. I'm wondering if the rest of the roms need replaced as well. Any ideas? I got a boot rom and flash drive so we can rule out the hd as well. Thanks.

yep... I've had this problem once. on my first KI board I bought. made the mistake of bidding on a "it might work and it might not, I have no way of testing it" deal.

I never learned the actual cause, the best I can come up with is that one of the surface mount components went bad. the Altera chips are no longer made. these boards were highly prone to breakage of the surface mount pins. particularly on the CPU (the one with the heatsink)

lots of people fucked with these trying to pop the heatsinks off and wound up ripping the entire CPUs out.

my solution was to stop trying to find one of these for cheap, pay the premium and get one that's tested working. I got mine from quarterarcade actually. when you consider some people buy these cheap and start trying to sell them for $400, the $230~ I paid was actually good. you can gamble on some of the idiots that try pawning these with broken hard drives on ebay and maybe get one for cheap, but know this, that there will be dozens of other people with the same know-how to identify a hard drive failure and I've seen these go for way more than I even paid.

it won't be a rom issue, or hard drive. you could try probing channelmanic, see if he's worked on these. it's sometimes something very stupid like one pin broke on the CPU, you can try inspecting it with a magnifying glass to make sure.

Well, it was a free board that was tossed in with the good KI1 cabinet I picked up. The KI1 works fantastic, I was using that cab to test this board. I was hoping to get lucky. I got the flash kit hoping that the new boot rom and flash drive would do the trick. Oh well, I'll just hang onto them for when I drop some cash on a known good board.

Thanks for the feedback..

The broken solder points on the processors is a common problem. There are some people that can reflow them for you. I had to do this on two of mine.

if you have a fine enough solder tip, possibly a razor blade, and some flux, you MIGHT be able to fix it yourself too.

I'd rather drop the money on something that works than do that though. obviously. I parted out my junk boards to another guy that needed the rams.

You can try shipping it to ChannelManiac. If he can fix it, you would have gotten a working board for a lot less than it would have cost to buy one off of ebay.
