I recently picked up an original KI1 machine. When turning it on I get a blue screen that rolls every now and then. The original owner said that it needed an IC chip that had burned out over 10 years ago. The machine has been sitting ever since. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm a total noob to the inner workings of arcade machines.

Other than the incorrect color joysticks, that machine looks really nice. Great score.
Blue screen is usually associated with a bad boot rom or hard drive not being recognized. See if you can get it in test mode (switches on coin door) and run a HD test.

I got the machine for $50 so those joysticks could be neon green for all I care haha. When turning it on I head the hard drive sound like its spinning really fast for a split second. Doesn't sound very good. I ordered the flash kit from revisionx last night so hopefully that will cure my prob. How do I get it in test mode? Just press the button once the machine is on?

On my KI II with a bad hard drive, I had to hit the test button at just the right time during startup, otherwise it would not go into test mode. And once I got into test mode, I couldn't run any tests. It just displayed the choices, but I couldn't select them. Sounds like a hard drive problem though. Mine had the same issue as yours.

Wow, $50 was an awesome deal for that working or not. The CF kit is a good start to getting it working. Sorry, I dont remember which of the three buttons is for the test menu.

I guess bugging the owner for 10 years paid off haha. the cf should be here Monday. Hopefully it all works after that is installed.

Does anyone know if KI 1 shouts, "Danger, Danger, Danger" when the HD is bad?

Jeff

yes. I know this because a) it's happened to me and b) in its emulation infancy, KIAME, they didn't have the hard drive emulation perfect yet and even if it worked it would still do the "danger, danger, danger" :D

Mine didn't say: Danger, Danger, Danger....even when I booted it without a harddrive (only a blue screen). I even had a corrupted CF card that would boot the game occasionally. It would either blue screen, black screen or boot to the game. Haven't heard it say that for anything at all. The only machine I've had that happen with is a KI2. And that only comes up when the machine has a bad harddrive). What is the JP32 jumper set to: (4 or 8)?

Is this blue screen people get a constant roll or one that stays blue and about every 30 seconds rolls down?

when I installed my CF kit from RevX, I tried using the Any-IDE rom that he supplied with it, and all mine did was the rolling blue screen, and it would just keep repeating this. I had an Any-IDE rom that I made myself that I just used instead.

so I wouldn't say that it's necessarily the drive at fault, but probably the U98 boot rom.

for the hell of it everyone that has this problem, did you try removing the U98 and cleaning the pins AND the socket? there's a jumper next to it that says 4 MB/8 MB, make sure that's correctly set to 4 MB.

the other problem that can happen if the U98 is bad is you'll get a white line pattern screen. this just means the whole thing is french toast. I wanna say one of those Altera surface mount chips has something to do with this problem as well. that was a long time ago for me, I just sold my bad boards with that to people who needed rams and stuff.

look around in the for sale section on here, you can get some good bargains sometimes.

Got my parts from revisionx.com in today. Installed them in 3 minutes and the game came back to life!

yeah, you might've had bad U98 roms. you can check for sure if it was the roms or the drives by just connecting the original drives. they'll work with RevX's boot chip.

glad it worked out though. we gotta keep these things alive. lol

Danger is definitly a hard drive failure

Sorry for bumping this thread, but I'm looking at a KI2 that has a blue screen and then it goes red and says Danger Danger. This is a hard drive issue as well I'm guessing? Does simply replacing the hard drive fix this problem?

I believe that does mean the hard drive is bad. I just swapped my cf for the old bad hard drive on my KI 1 machine and got the blue screen but didn't change over the red or say danger. May have only been on KI 2 machines?

It's odd that, early today, I was cleaning up and moving the same KI 1 machine I was talking about in the original post 10 years ago.

KI2 will give you a red screen if the hard drive is bad, yes. whereas KI1 will just get stuck on the blue screen or maybe will keep looping it over and over.

either instance is great, what you don't want is that white line pattern. that means your CPU will either be deceased or in the very least will need to be resoldered again.

Alright, thanks man! I'm picking this up then! As the seller only wants $300 for it, and it's in great shape with no issues other than this!
