Killer Instinct 1 Hard Drive GONE :(

They are the best option.

You can try to find an old hard drive of the right type and put the CHD file from MAME on it... It's far easier to swap a ROM and plug in the CF and IDE adapter.

the original, very happy with mine Scott is a good guy.

write up about my kit from there:

the ebay kits might work ok but you'll still need the ribbon cable (not that that really matters), Scott also offers returns/support :D

Chad (Arcadecupcom) @arcadecup.com also sells a kit which i'm sure is very good also (i haven't tried it but he works magic when it comes to fixing KI boards).

ToplessZ made em too. I'm not sure how active he is lately with making kits, I think right now he's just selling security chips and stuff, but you could try PMing him.

I run a RevisionX kit in my KI, ToplessZ one in my KI2. they're both great.

the ones that require a ribbon cable are the stupid knockoffs. ignore those. original drives work too.. if they still work. I have a collection of them here, but for your money you might as well go with a new CF kit and be done with it.

Hi are you still looking? I think I have one available if you are interested. A CF drive. Let me know, thanks!

Flash Drives

I had both my Carnevil and Area 51 converted to Flash Drive.

Here is the seller on Ebay, super nice guy, was willing to try other games too if you were willing to send him the Pcb to get the files from.

A little pricey, but his aren't the knock offs with the ribbon cable, it is the one that plugs directly into the Pcb port via the flash drive holder, very solid and sturdy, look at his pics.

I made my own CF kit for mine. If you dont already have the parts just buy the kit, DIY doesnt save much money. I only did it because I already had the CF card.

If it's KI or KI2 replacement get them from Scott/revisionx/killerinstinctproject. You'll need the any IDE boot rom.

As far as "knock offs with the ribbon cable" in my experience it doesn't make much difference. It's all cosmetic as long as the CF/IDE adapter works.

What's wrong with just replacing the drive with another hard drive? It's not like hard drives are difficult to get, especially the older, smaller ones that KI and friends use.

Nothing, but you'll need the any IDE boot rom if you don't have it already as the regular boot rom looks for a specific hard drive model # in the IDE info and reboots the game if it doesn't find it. KI2 does a similar check looking for leading zeros in the drive serial # and reboots as well. Plus you need to do a true image copy of the drive which not everyone can do even when it's spelled out for them. It's much easier to get a long lasting CF card and boot rom programmed for you than mess with it for most people.

yeah, I'd just go CF, if you go any other way you have to get 2.5"->3.5" IDE adapter as well as program your own U98 rom. I've personally done all of these and still went CF lol.

RevisionX or maybe ToplessZ. take your pick.

Yeah, I guess you're right, especially if you don't have an EPROM programmer. For me it would be a LOT easier to just burn the ROM and write a hard drive and be done with it than to have to go buy parts, or wait for something to arrive, then go back to working on the project, etc. I tend to go with whatever is most readily available, and small IDE hard drives are by far a lot more available than CF cards and adapters.
