Ken's Payphone Thread

So interesting how the manual for the Plus version doesn't have the on Board programming like the original version. But as you mentioned to me, maybe it's still there but just hidden.. I gotta find it now!!

I recall one of the AT&T salesman telling me and my boss that the "Plus" model could also be programmed at the phone itself.

CueBall,

We need to get back in touch and work on the Elcotel phones again. With the holidays coming up I will have a lot more free time to help you out. The Elcotel PNM software is so much more of a pain then Protel Expressnet.

The Elcotel PNM program we had at the game route operator I used to work for was all DOS. The first version was on several 5-1/4" floppies. The next version was still DOS, but released on both 5-1/4" and 3" floppies.

The latest version was released in Windows format (and on a CD Rom) which is what you want to use for today's dialing formats. It contains the correct long distance area code formats where the middle digit of the area code can be any digit instead of only 0 or 1.

I picked up the Wiltelco 5000 manual on eBay. I will be scanning it in and sending a copy to payphone411 (their online copy only goes to part of chapter 3).

Anyone know the coin chute hardware used in the Wiltelco 5000? Mine is missing the hardware. It looks like it might be coin co from diagrams and pictures.

Please scan the cover in color. It has a silver and blue metalic cover that simply does not scan well in black-and-white. Everything else in it can be scanned in the usual black-and-white.

I'd like a good copy of that manual myself since we used to operate some Wiltelco phones back in 1986. What I'd also like to get is the manuals for the Wiltelco 6000 which replaced the 5000 in 1988.

At one time I had all the payphone and board schematics from Williams but threw them all away about 20 years ago and I now wish I would have kept them.

The Williams (Wiltelco) used all GTE/Palco/Quadrum cases and hardware. So yes, it uses the Coinco acceptors.

You will need this assembly:

http://www.payphone.com/Coinco-Coin-Acceptor.html

If the plastic reject chute is also missing, use this:

http://www.payphone.com/Coin-Reject-Chute.html

If the coin trigger (coin switches) switch assembly is missing, use this:

http://www.payphone.com/Trigger-Switch.html

Thanks Ken!

I want to make sure I can get it working before investing too much into it. Currently it's reporting a few errors (Speech error, ASAP Click error, U5 bad...).

Mjenison,

I think I was eying the same manual that you got off of ebay.
I would really appreciate a better copy of the 5000 manual then what I have on the site right now. If you need a Coinco acceptor let me know as I have a bunch of them, just email me your address to [email protected] and I can send one out to you

Forgot to add. If you are looking for another site for payphone parts try http://tullc.us/

The site is not the best. I have worked with them in the past and they do most of there business over the phone. I usually send my smart boards to them for repair and never had an issue.

Absolutely. I've been thinking about that. Things are also quieting down for me. Hopefully we can get it all figured out.

With all this talk of programming, I am happy I have my single slot rotary, in my wooden indoor phone booth. No programming required. It was unmolested when I got it and didn't come with keys, took forever to drill the locks out. I have wanted it to take money just can't justify buying one of those $200 controllers. It works on a regular phone line without any modifications.

(this isn't mine just an example)

Price

What is a decent price for a payphone with all internals and keys? I'm guessing that it has not been changed for home use. Thanks.

QUOTE]

The scan of the manual is now available from the payphone411 website:

http://www.payphone411.com/manuals.html

I found out the problem with mine. Mine was missing a wiring harness from the power supply to the board. I had created a harness going from power supply to PCB, but didn't notice there was another connector the wiring harness also had to go to on the audio board. I rebuilt the wiring harness to include that connector and the phone now passes all tests and I can hear a dial tone.

Now I just need to figure out how to configure it to ring for incoming calls, and how to allow outgoing calls without paying for it. The manual seems to imply you can enter new rates and enter new rate table entries for new area codes, but no luck so far.

Well, I was finally able to get my WiltelCo 5000 working for home use, free dialing!

Found out the reason I couldn't make or receive calls was that the phone jack socket on the Wiltel5000 wasn't making contact with my phone cord. Modern phone cords have very narrow slots and the jack pins just wouldn't go in. I took a more modern jack socket and installed it on the board and now there is continuity.

I was able to program into the rate table the area codes I wanted to call for free. I have software revision 5.10, which has a few additional options not covered in the manual (though I didn't need to use them to setup the phone for free outgoing dialing).

So much for those pay phone repair people I contacted telling me I'd have to convert the phone for home use.

You should make a list of those additional programming options because they are not in the manual. Too bad you can't do a rom dump too.

Programming Elcotel payphones

Resurrecting Ken's payphone thread. :)

Ran across a potentially useful program on an old computer. It is a PNM Plus Demo Copy. I used it in the past to program my Elcotel payphone. It is a 16bit program for Windows 3.1, but it appears to have installed and runs ok on my Windows 7 machine. To program a payphone, a dial-up modem is needed on the computer as well.

When I used it, not having a second phone line. I accessed my payphone using a telephone line simulator. But I suppose you could call your house from your buddy's house next door ;). I think you also have to perform a reset procedure to tell the payphone to answer the modem when it calls. If anybody wants a copy to experiment with, drop me a PM with your email address and I'll send you the zipped file.

Phil
