Keeper games where "Continues" kill the replay value

I know there is a recent thread about Toobin being a decent game, but one that loses it's luster due to Continues.

What other games are like that?

I had an original Gauntlet I and II and I think that fell in that category also.

smash TV is a fun game that I have fond memories of from BITD which is why I had to buy one. It's one of those games that gets a lot of play when people come over but, personally I don't play it often. Actually I've never played the game all the way through. Which if funny because most of my friends have beaten the game on my machine.

Is it really considered "beating the game" when you pump $50 in to it? (even virtual quarters)

In games like Smash TV, Guerilla War, or any game that has continues like that I enjoy when they are very difficult. If I can beat the game on one credit or come close with no effort it would be no fun.

In Guerilla War and Smash TV I would always judge how well I played by far far I got into the game on that one credit then continue the game if I wanted to. It doesn't kill the game if it is a good game to begin with. Playing Pac-Man or Galaga with continues wouldn't really make sense as the entire game is pretty much the same.

Metal Slug is another great example of a fun game with continues.

No. which is probably why I've never gotten all the way through the game. It's not fun to give your self a million lives. In that scenario a monkey would eventually beat the game if he sat there and pounded on the controls long enough.

Aero Fighters is disappointing with continues. Arkanoid is not because regardless you have to start the screen over. I would be really impressed watching somebody go all 32 screens and kill the end boss in one credit. I have never beaten the end boss in the eleven years I have owned Arkanoid and there are NO continues past screen 32 the VAUS'S you carry into boss stage 33 are the only ones you get.

How about not continuing on any of these games? Play as far as you can, and start over. Continuing only "kills" games when the player decides to use them.

true but, some games are designed to be either nearly impossible if not impossible to beat without continuing. Smash TV seems to be a good example. I'm truly not sure this game can be beat without continues no matter how good you are. Some stages you are overran with enemies to a point where it seems impossible to not die. Even in the early levels.

I don't usually even make to Mutoid Man on one credit, once in a while I do though; getting through the "Meet Mr. Shrapnel" stage alive is key. Evenso, you would miss so much more mayhem if you did not continue farther into Smash TV. Some of the later arenas are so much brutal good fun that no one is gonna get through on just one credit; maybe not even three credits!

NO WAY!

Yes it is a very good example; I need to quit hyping it because I still need to get one! lol!

Not a bad question, but might be better phrased as "what home games (i.e. on free play) are still fun to play with the continue option?", as I feel the majority that have continue kind of lose it with free play. Blasteroids and Joust 2 come to mind as examples that aren't good. Blasteroids is especially bland on free play with continue.

The availability of continues doesn't hurt any game for me. You have two good options.
You can limit your credits and improve your skills (say, limit yourself to 3 continues and keep trying to get further).

The other option is the one I typically choose. I'll play clear through a game regardless of the number of credits. Keep doing that until you are able to do it on one credit, or at least just a few. The kind of games I keep coming back to aren't spoiled by seeing the end or anything. I just like them for the actual gameplay.

I loved Life force for this reason. You can put nine credits in, but that's it, and you have to put them in at the beginning. If you press start and don't have all 9 in - you play with whatever lives you have.

Two more: Moon Patrol and Lost Tomb.

Lost Tomb bites, because if you play it all the way through, it just drops you at the bottom level and it is not any harder then the first time through.
