wells gardner 25K7191 flyback caught fire

My 25" monitor in my Neo Geo wasn't firing up so I pulled it out to take a look at the chassis. It's a wells gardner 25k7191, the fuse was blown so I used a flow chart to figure out what was wrong. I checked diodes d19-d22 and d19 was open so I replaced it, when I plugged in the monitor I could hear it fire up but then saw a glow from the back of the monitor. I unplugged it right away, the glow was the flyback caught fire on the top, I assume there was a pin hole there. Obviously I have to change that but should I be worried that somehthing else could have been damaged now? Why would the flyback catch on fire? Has anyone else had this happen to them?

Original flybacks for the k7000 series are well known for developing cracks/pinholes and arcing. If you caught it soon enough you might get away with simply replacing the flyback with a brand new one.

Flybacks fail. I've had flybacks with holes in the top looked like the 4th of July. Nothing else blew but clearly that needed replaced. If a flyback blows it'll generally take out the HOT so when you order a new flyback be safe and order a new hot while you're at it.

That was the first time I had seen flame from a flyback so that was something new but kinda neat to see. I just ordered a K7000 flyback repair kit from Bob Roberts which comes with a HOT, fuse, cap kit and of course a flyback. Figure might as well do the caps while I am in there. Thanks for the info gentlemen :)

yep... the old k7000 torcho!! heh..

just be happy you were there when it let loose!!!!

thats why i NEVER leave my games on unattended, ever, for any reason...

I also have a fire extinguisher in my arcade.... ill give you 10 guesses why :D

The nice thing is you still have spark.... which indicates your HOT is not blown.
Good chance if you replace the FBT you'll be up and running.

I have seen one original k7000 flyback fill an entire room with thick smoke.. and i mean lots!

I witnessed a brand-new K7000 flyback catch fire once.

We'd just replaced it and was letting it run on the bench. We were doing something about twenty feet away. I smelled something odd, but didn't give it much thought because we were located in an old industrial building, there were odd smells all the time.

Then a couple people walked by and noted that /they/ smelled something odd, something burning.

The guy I was working with and I looked at each other, then turned our attention to the monitor, that had a massive column of smoke rising toward the ceiling. The amazing thing was that it was still on with a perfect picture!

He went and got his camera, we cleared away the smoke as best we could, then fired it up again so we could get pictures. He's got them, I don't. It was pretty cool.

Swapped out the fly again, and as far as I know the machine is still on the street earning.

Crazy stuff, I never thought a flyback would catch fire. I already have a new flyback repair kit coming from bob roberts which comes with a HOT, cap kit and fuse so even though the HOT might be okay I'll put the new one in and if the old one is still good I'll have a spare kicking around.
