the 13k7866 in my new (old) megatouch machine went out. no neck glow or anything. it had a bad wave to it, so I am waiting for the cap kit to arrive (today)

wednesday, I had left it running for most of the day. sometime during the day the screen got dark on the left side, I didn't think that much of it at the time because the nasty wave went mostly away. I turned it off when I went down to dinner, and the monitor has not come back on since.

have any of you guys seen anything like this before? I am about to take the chassis out and see if there is anything obviously wrong.

should I proceed with the cap kit and hope all is well when I turn it back on?

(edit) hey look at all the sticky info about the k7000, maybe I should read first eh.

well, I did quite a bit of reading of the sticky k7000 thread. I capped the monitor and reflowed tons of solder connections on the header pins, pots and big resistors. the monitor is alive again, the colors are bright and beautiful, but the wave is still just as bad as it was before.

do I need to replace the flyback, or is there something else I should try?

my next step will be to try a different monitor with the board to see if the board has the problem, or a different board with this monitor.

ID check the game with diff monitor before you go much further.

A+ on getting it working again, sounds like the old caps got bad enough to keep her from firing up.

If the old fly has black adjustment knobs and you didnt see any cracks, its probhably o.k. to use( but they arent that much man)

if it proves the wave is still an issue with the monitor and not the game, then id replace the big filter cap and recheck( it aint inclused with a standard cap kit)

If the wave is in the game itself, suspect power supply, krappy fuse holder, etc.

+1 on checking the grounds to verify good earth ground to the monitor frame. Without it k7000's will have a wavey look to the entire screen.

I tried grounding the chassis to the frame and to the fg lug of the switcher, both with no success. i put the wire around one of the screws that hold the chassis in place. is there a better place to ground it?

I also just tried my elevator action pcb. it looked a bit better, but the diagonal wave was still there, just not as bad.

going to swap out the power supply, and if I have time I'll reflow the header pins on the game board.

I still have to try a different monitor with the megatouch pcb, the megatouch wires are not long enough to reach the other monitor, and of course he power plug is different.

gotta go to radio shack and get some connectors, wire, and solder.

Good to know....

I dunno why, but that is always one of my last resorts. I'll have to rethink that concept now.
