So I have a K7000 in my newly acquired X-Men cab. It works for the most part as the game is playable. However, I have a few issues that hopefully someone with more monitor experience can help me out with.

Some things to note:

1. There are no adjustment pots on the chassis, but a wiring harness attached to each adjustment location leading to a remote PCB board. The pot locations on the chassis do not exactly correspond with the remote PCB pots as far as description or type of adjustment. So there are 7 adjustment pots on the chassis and only 6 adjustment pots on the remote PCB.

2. I tried adjusting the black level (brightness?) and contrast pots on the remote PCB as well as the focus and screen pots on the chassis. I also tried adjusting the color pots on the tube PCB. The best I could get was sort of the right colors but really dim to a point where it can only be played somewhat comfortably in a pitch black room. If I try to up the black level and contrast on the remote PCB, it makes the screen brighter but it washes out all the graphics and causes the colors to misalign.

I'll try to post pictures later as I'm sure that would be more helpful to diagnose these problems. Does a dim screen usually mean it's time for a cap kit? Usually, from what I've seen, it's collapse and jail bars that scream cap kit.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks! :)

It most likely needs a cap kit and possibly a new flyback. The K7000 flybacks supplied from the factory tend to wear out, sometimes even cracking and arcing to other components. Bob has a full rebuild kit that I recommend to anyone with a K7000 with the original flyback.

does this monitor have a "screen" pot on the chassis near the fly back. Usually you have a screen and a focus pot there. The screen pot should adjust brightness. If this doesn't help then my vote would be to cap it.

Sounds like you also have a convergence issue if your colors are not aligned.

Yeah, like I said, when I up the screen pot, it just makes the screen bright blue and washes out all the graphics. I also tried adjusting the color pots while doing this. Same result.

The convergence only happens when I up the contrast. Or do I have to adjust the convergence after upping the brightness and contrast? I hate trying to adjust those rings. We'll see how it goes.

Cap kit always seems to be the answer in these situations. It's unavoidable. :)

Thanks Dan and Zinyo!

That sounds more like "bleeding" rather than "convergence". But a pic would tell the tale.

Two main factors in an unadjustable dim picture or dull colors -
1. Cap Kit
2. Tube Rejuvination

Obviously cap it first and go from there.

go the full nine, cap it and replace the flyback. then after that I'd say go through the white balancing procedure, even with convergence issues you'd still be able to do that. if you can't white balance it by adjusting the drive/bias pots on the neckboard, then you have a tube problem which can either be sorted out by rejuve or tube swap (!!!)

probably not what you wanted to hear, but it'll look pretty when it's all sorted out.

the part where it's all blue and the colors are smeared, did you try turning the contrast down first? turn the brightness and contrast to the middle position, then adjust your Screen accordingly. I had some games I got at auction that had red smear (the tube actually had a red gun short..) from the geniuses dialing the Screen and Contrast way up because the Brightness pot had zero effect. after re-capping it, I was able to get rid of the jailbars and score brightness adjustment back. and a rejuve fixed the tube.

I'll see when I can get around to getting it capped and go from there. The good news is the game is still playable, but hopefully I can get it looking bright and crisp eventually.

Thanks again guys for taking the time to give me advice!

i had a K7400 25" in my CarnEvil that was dim and obviously needed a new flyback. new flyback (and a cap kit just for good measure,) fixed the focus issues but it was still dim so blinddog and i rejuved it at one of FullThrottle's parties and it looks nearly brand-spanking new now.

Okay, I spent more time adjusting the monitor tonight. The screen settings in the test menu really helps. I feel like it looks a lot better. However, there are a couple of standing issues:

1. Monitor is still dim, but it's not horrible. I could play comfortably with the lights on. It took some playing around with the "Screen" pot on the chassis as well as the color pots on the neck board. Before, I couldn't see "Game Over" flaming. It was just solid yellow. Now I can see it, but again, it's dim.

2. Colors are washed out. More on the top of the screen than the bottom. I can tell because the blue background in the attract screens (konami logo, etc.) are a faded and not as crisp and rich as they should be.

Based on this, I feel like the monitor tube needs to be rejuvenated more than anything else although I don't own the hardware to do it. A cap kit could only make it better. So I guess we'll see once I actually take the steps to get it repaired.

On a side note, the sound wiring was hacked up and spliced by the op who had it before. 1 out of the 2 speakers doesn't work and I'm getting a crackling noise every now and then which may mean the caps on the sound board are leaking and messing up the traces and connections on the board. I really hope this is not the case and that it's just an issue with the wiring and/or speakers.

Unfortunately, the pictures actually make the monitor look better than it actually appears. They were taken in a dark room. You can definitely tell how the colors are washed out especially on the FBI and Konami logo screen:

your purple tint in the picture shows signs that the green is weak, if that helps any.

sometimes cap kits can fix colors, but if you're not getting any green out of the bias control then chances are your green in the tube is screwed.

I'd swap the green and red or blue transistors just to be sure though. I can't tell fully from the picture, but your green might even be totally out.
