Just picked up a Tempest and for the most part it looks pretty good. But I'd say 2 pretty obvious problems with the monitor are what I'd call top/bottom pincushion and convergence in the lower-right corner. Does that sound right?

Pincushion - from reading posts it sounds like this could be a bad A/B12 chip. Well, the manual calls for MC1495L chips for all 4 of those in the corner of the board (A/B12, A/B13, C12, C13). But looking at what I have, only C13 is a MC1495L, and the rest are SG1495N. Are those chips compatible? Should I maybe just get 4 new MC1495L chips and replace them all? Also, A/B12 has that cap on it - is that original?

Convergence - could this be fixed with adjustments to the yoke rings?

Thanks in advance! -Wes

Not sure I have your answer but did you try to adjust the X and BIP and X and Y LIN pots?

and all of the 3 tempest boards I have have that capacitor soldered on that chip

Thanks Joe - I actually was able to use the BIP adjustments to get the segment endpoints to line up right (it was off when I got it). I don't yet understand exactly what the LIN pots do - they seem to act pretty much like the SIZE pots do.

But nothing will affect that vertical pincushion. I think I'm just gonna order some 1495 chips and replace and see what happens.

The lower right problem that I'm calling a convergence issue is a "discoloring" thing. Almost like when a monitor needs a deguass after a magnet gets close to it. I need to post better pics of that in the test mode that shows the diff colored crosshatches.
