so, i put the hv cage mesh cover on my tempest tonight. had it on for about an hour and a half because i was converging the monitor. with the cage cover on, the hv cage seemed to be a lot hotter and i noticed a heat type of crackle noise coming from the flyback area once it got real hot.

no smoke or failed components, but i was wondering, could i have damaged the flyback having it run hot for a while like that? with the fan i have blowing on it (without the cover on) it runs cooler and i've had it on for long periods of time with no problems in the past.

other thing - i decided i'm gonna just leave the cover off because of that, so it runs a bit cooler with being able to get the airflow from the fan on it. i get a bit of the jitters with it off, which doesn't bother me, but with the cover off, will the electrical interference or whatever eventually cause a problem in the monitor?

If you have a fan on it, don't worry about it. I have no fan on mine, can feel the heat coming out the vents on top, and have the cage on it - and mine works just fine, and has for quite a while...

cool. i was mainly worried because i had a 19v1000 in a space invaders that made that crackling noise, cooked itself, and smoked and died pretty quick.

this seems to be working fine, the extreme heat on the hv cage and flyback just freaked me out. do the 6100's normally run that hot, (when there's not a fan blowing on them)?

They normally run quite hot - hard to tell if yours is running *too* hot without seeing it though. Make sure the B+ is dialed in correctly.

A fan is a good idea. Vector games really should have had fans on those monitors in the first place.

my b+ is fine. right at 180. temp wise, the hv cage is hot to the touch without the fan running (not hot enough to burn you or make you pull your hand away).

and also, while i'm thinking, there's a big white sand 'rectangle shape' resistor on the right side of the neckboard that is hot enough that you don't want to touch it too long. is that normal? it doesn't get hot enough to nuke itself though, i haven't seen it smoke or anything.

You can also replace the thermal paste on the two transistors that are on the cage itself. That will minimize and "extra" heat in the area.

In a G08, the output transistors get REALLY hot. Of course you can't touch the transistors themselves, because they have voltage on them, but the FRAME that the heat sink is bolted to is HOT.

You can keep your hand on it, but it's like a radiator.

I just built a 120v fan into my Tempest. Simply because I am paranoid. I am going to baby this monitor.

yeah, that's what i've got on mine. sitting right under the frame blowing up through the deflection board and onto the neck board and hv cage.

I have mine mounted on the side blowing straight on the deflection board and transistors.

does that work pretty well? i just did a touch test on the frame and area, and it seems cooler in general in the deflection and hv areas. the fan i have is a radio shack 120v 35cfm fan. i originally debated the 60 cfm fan but i don't want the extra noise.

You know, I am not sure. My main goal was to just have air moving around the monitor to help with heat dissipation. The fan I have is one that I nabbed out of a DK cocktail. Not the most quiet fan around, but in complete honesty, I dont really mind the noise.

When I rebuild a WG k6100. I usually leave the cage open to allow for optimal air flow. My Star Wars and Tempest both have fans in the cabinet. My Space Duel and Major Havoc, do not . My games are really never left on for extended times, like they were when they were in arcades. I don't think this is a big issue, unless you are putting it on location.
