K4600 - Only shows some colors sometimes - Puzzled..

Hey guys,

Here is some backstory.. I got contacted by someone to do a Capkit install. Got onsite and noticed that all of the colors were wacked out. Literally. Ms Pacman was Purple, 1942 had no blue water and no green trees. Burgertime buns were not brown and everything was just wacky. Galaga however looke normal. Backgound was OK, etc.

I go to find out that this 60 in 1, originally had a mspac in it (it was a mspac cab) and that board also had a purple mspac and is what prompted the purchase of the 60 in 1.

I have attached some screenshots of what is going on. I did the capkit anyway knowing it wouldn't fix anything.. Retouched solder joints on some connectors, etc.

Any ideas on where to look or what to do? I am at the point where based on the history this isn't a board issue. (Maybe a harness issue?? but the colors work sometimes and in other screens!)

Thanks,

Matt

guy claims it was working when he first got the cab. Then his pac went purple and then he got the 60 in 1.

Do you think this is on the chassis or should I be looking at the harness?

I find it very implausible that this is anything other than the two wires swapped in the video plug of the monitor. Either it was done intentionally as a joke or the plug was unhooked for some reason and the pins fell out, and swapped around inadvertently, but it's very clear that those two wires are reversed.

While it's possible for the purity to get goofed up so that the green gun hits the blue phosphor in areas, it's just not possible to get it so completely even over the whole screen, and reversed with the blue that way.

Look at the Molex plug that connects to the monitor. The wires should be in the order RED GREEN BLUE. If it's mixed up, then you've found your answer.

Double check the solder joints on the video interface board.

Remember, the pinout of the input connector varies depending on the board's "P" number:

Do you mean the board itself or the socket to the chassis? I had found a few cold joints by the chassis that were repaired during the capkit. I didn't touch anything on the board itself, just the caps.

This monitor has a separate 3 pin header for the sync, so I would assume it's either a 306 or 317? I have the guy trying to check the label, I just forgot to write the exact model he had.

EDIT: it's a 19k4626 - im going to check the wiring from the harness

Another vote for the "colors swapped" theory.
I used swapped the G & B channels in the images you posted, and they look pretty normal:

And that did the trick! Swapped pins 2 and 3 and all looks well.

I did have to call the guy out and say there is no posisble way this was working, unless he was the one that changed it. hehe

Thanks again for all of the help, much appreciated!
