just started restoring a 1973 chicago coin commando !!

hello everyone las week i pulled a chicago coin commando outta someones basement. the machine worked about halfway.....it would play and keep score but the timer would not work, it would not reset the previous scores, and the planes would not dip and dive like they should......

today i fixed almost everything on it mechanically however, the one thing i am having trouble with is whenever i shoot down a helicopter the machine IS SUPPOSED to flash a red light on inside the cabinet. well the red light works, however it stays on all the time now.....hmmmm......im not sure what could be wrong....

anyway heres a few pics of this machine......i

i tired fixing the red light problem and spent about 2 hours messing with different coils and contacts and have had no luck......anyone have any ideas? or does anyone know where i can get schematics

That's a fun one for sure. I played a Commander machine at the Manitou Springs arcade a couple years back and loved it!

ok........now im really confused......

today i started working on this commando game again and i fixed the light problem. i tried to read the schematics and i found where someone soldered a wire to keep the red light on ALL the time.

however now im having another problem. the machine was working fine before except for the light. NOW the 1000's are not working all the time. about 1 in every 5-10 games they will work. it will not roll over from 900-1000. everything else seems to work as normal. i cleaned the contacts around the score reels, then cleaned all moving parts including the coil and the metal piece inside, plus the plastic sleeve. the 1000s unit will reset normal the beginning of the game but wont register......(it used to work fine)
i tried reconnecting the wire i cut (for the red light problem) and that still didnt do anything.

the other thing its doing which is weird. is that whenever i press the start button the motor keeps running and running and wont start a game. however if i reach up and slighly turn the thousands reel (i mean turn it very very little like 1/16 of an inch) then it will continue to start a game like normal. loose connection? i took this thing apart like 5 times tonite seriously

anyone ever have similair problems on these old gun games?

If the score reels work like an EM pinball then on each reel there will be a 0 switch and a 9 switch. On hundreds reel, the 9 switch could be dirty or not adjusted, which can cause it not to roll over to 1000. On the 1000 reel, the 0 or home switch probably needs adjusting so that it makes proper contact when the reel is on 0. Hope this helps.

regards Derek

ok guys, i finally fixed this game. my hundreds was not rolling over into the 1000s reel, the contacts on the opposite side of the board which holds the score reel were not touching the ENTIRE way around. most of the way it looked good but after closer inspection that was my problem. and i fixed the red light problem which i am happy about. so now this game is working fine. ill post more pics and i progress through it. i got alot of cleaning to do on the cabinet

the best part is the victory dance and the celebration beer after i fixed something........(this may sound silly but i have very little EM repair skills..........so far haha)
