the coin door has a horrible sticker over the poor midway plate

there looks like a few faults on the power board with a bit of hacked up wiring.
not sure whats going on here,

random button, it doesnt look wired up inside

inside the cab was a set of game boards and it also came with a spare set too i started comparing them both and i noticed this on the rom boards that one has an extra one

also theres some heat sinks missing, i hope those chips are ok (ive ordered replacement heatsinks

hopefully it was a working replacement part LOL

i think that will do for now!

i was told by the seller that if switched on the lights came on but not much else. im not going to plug it in until the power board is sorted out so i think that and checking all the wiring is going to the right places will be my first job. apart from a hoover out. it should be fun! Big smile

all comments welcome, what do you guys think?

Well ive got a little done so far but its taken me a good while. ive cleaned inside the cab. replaced the cap that had blew on the power board. then i started checked over the wiring. at some point someone has cut the plugs off for the 28 pin connector to the game board, and the bottom connector on the power board. ive checked all the pins with my meter and they all seem to be going to the right places. so after double checking the wiring with the game boards removed out of the cab i turned the power on. most of the lights in the cab were on and i could see a glow from the neck tube.
i checked the voltages and there all over the place around 40v on the 5v line! turning the pots on the power board make no difference.

i found that bob roberts in america makes a kit to rebuild the power board but he doesnt take paypal only cash in the post or auctionchex what ever that is? i would really like one of these kits but i only have paypal available to me
heres the link to his kit

ive noticed the pin with the thick yellow wire which comes straight from the transformer to the powerboard is burning the plastic connector, could there be a wiring fault on the transformer?

It is probably not the xformer but something after it. disconnect the connector from the pcb (where it is getting melty). Usually the yellow wires are for audio but sinc that is comming from a transformer it is ac voltage and will probably go to some kind of rectifier.

What ever the case is, something on the pcb is shorted and pulling lots of current from the yellow wire and if it gets hot enough; Fire.

EDIT:

What is the supply voltage from you wall outlet?

Thanks for the reply. I'm hoping to get the kit from bob Roberts to rebuild the power board. Hopefully that should get things running better.
In the uk we run 240v

That is what I thought and make certain the transformers are setup for that voltage input and NOT the 110-120.

Yeah will do. I'm going go replace all the connectors and pins too when iv worked out which ones I need. I can't believe no one has commented on the side art lol.

From most of the repair threads I've seen (and my own GORF) that 1st pin housing is almost always burnt. In the schematics, that yellow wire from the transformer goes to pin 1, but there is supposed to be a 2nd wire tapped off of that that also connects to pin 2. One of these is usually missing. It's labeled as 'C. Tap', I'm not sure what that means. Could is be for 'common' (i.e. ground)? I repaired my connector and only have the wire in position 1 (no 2nd wire tapped to pos 2), and all has been well - but it's only been on 1-2 hours total. I'll probably add the other before too long, just to be safe.

If you bought this within the UK, I bet the x-former is already wired for 240, but it won't hurt to check. I doubt this caused the melting of the housing though. The power supply definitely needs a rebuild, but should be good after that.

C Tap I believe is center tap on the transformer. Double check that with others but that is what it has meant when ever I have seen it.

thanks guys, im in the process or sorting my order with bob roberts. ive been searching through other gorf threads, it seems theres quite a few gorfs in USA but there isnt that many in the uk it seems.

Some one else had added the second pin next to the yellow one which always burns on a thread i read, it seems like a good idea and i will do that with mine when all my parts arrive. i cant wait for the parts to arrive i really want to make a start on the machine.

Its one side of your ac, so if it says 12v on the other line, between c.tap and that line should have 12v ac.

So, it's like the neutral in an AC circuit?

I also had to replace one of the connectors for the card rack as one of pins there had melted it away. Pulling out 28 .100 pins with all the wiring still in the cab was fun. If you do that, bring a pillow to sit on.

Another thing, make sure your mains plug has a ground prong. If not, remove the ground strap/wire going to your control panel. With the exposed metal it's not enough to hurt, but you'll notice it.

yeah i plan to replace the connectors that go onto the top of the board too. someone has made a bit of a mess of the wiring previously. so i want to get it spot on. i want the cab to be reliable when its all working. all our plugs in the uk have a ground plug but thanks for the tip.

hahaha no one had said anything. yeah its been panted over the original paint with a slightly darker blue then that daft side art put on. eventually i will repaint it and replace the side art. atm im just waiting for parts to arrive. i hope they dont take too long.

while im waiting for my order to arrive from bob roberts i got hold of some more spares for gorf including another power board and the transformers and wiring. i plugged in the spare board with the transformers and i checked the voltages on the terminals on the big transfmormer and they were near enough what it says on it 14.5v 9v 0v 9v 14.5v 0v 12v

but when i check the one in the cab i get voltages all over the place around 30-50 odd volts? anyone any ideas whats going on?
