So I go pick up one of my "grails" today - an awesome restored Dragon's Lair. The move went very smoothly. I got it upstairs to my gameroom, made sure everything was plugged and in the right place, and fired it up - about 15 seconds later, a burning smell!!! I could see hints of smoke with my flashlight and it looks like it's coming from the monitor area (which was recently replaced). I have played it several times at the guy that I got it from's house and there were no issues at all. Needless to say, I ain't powering it back on - any ideas?? Thanks in advance.

Sorry about that - yes, everything looked fine when I turned it on. Sound, monitor, everything looked playable - I just shut her down when I started to smell it.

Have you opened up the back to visually inspect everything? Take some pics and post them up.

Will do. Thanks guys. I admit, I'm a little green, but I'm learning.

I have visually inspected everything and can't see anything wrong, disconnected, burned looking, frayed, etc. It's pretty damn clean. I'll go take some pics.

Thanks again!

Take a good look as to where you believe the smoke was coming from. You very likely may have a component that has burnt up- or was starting to. If you power it back up, make sure you stand carefully behind behind the game and watch closely to if you see more smoke. The good news is, if the monitor has crapped out, you can put a normal 19" TV in in it.

Mark,

Yeah, it actually has a normal 19" TV monitor in it now - Guy I bought it from put it in within the past 6 mos or so, and it did come on when I smelled the burn.

OK, I don't know if I am slow or what, but when I powered it on again to make sure of the exact spot the burning smell/smoke was coming from, it didn't do it; nor has it done it since and I have been playing for about 3 hours now. Could it have been dust maybe?? Who knows. I do appreciate everyone's feedback tho.

Hopefully all is well....
I had a similar experience a few days ago. I've been working on some PCB's, and when I applied power to the repaired boardset, I swear I smelled smoke. I shut it down immediately, and checked the PCB for any hot IC's, or burnt spots. Couldn't find anything, so I powered it back up, and it still worked fine. I let it run for a hour- still no problems. Who knows? At least it works!

You bought the Dragon's Lair that was on Dallas CL?

Whenever I pick up a new game, I allways open it up and take a look inside in case something came loose. I also power them up with the cab open and looking inside... So far they all passed the "smoke test".

Alot of mine get slid on their backs up to the back of the truck. If you do this, allways check to see if the monitor is bolted down tight. Had a misshap with Sinistar, and a broken neck. Was a hard learning experience. Sinistar has a new Vision Pro in it tho... This was a while back, but it stays in your mind when it happens to you!
