So ... I brought home my new (to me) BSD last night. Overall, I am happy with it for the price paid. Everything works and the playfield is in good cosmetic condition. One side is horribly faded, but I think I can hide it against the wall.

So ... any good mods out there for this game?

I read somewhere about some prototype sling plastics ?!?!

And I guess I'll need a cliffy protector ... anything else you guys have seen done to BSD that would be worthy of doing to this one?

Thanks in advance ...

I didn't do any major mods, but a few little subtle things.

-LEDs in the bumpers. The bumpers are a BITCH to get to due to the coffin...so - just put some LEDs in there from cointaker or BCS, and you'll be good to to
-Cliffy protector on the rathole
-Color Cliffy post sleeves on the posts (instead of the black ones)
-Green LED in the mist motor socket...it really makes the green inserts GLOW when the mist ball floats across the playfield.

The proto slings are cool...mine is an early production game and came w/ them. I'm so used to them, the game looks weird without them.

Wow ... thanks for the info.

Of course, I have more questions ...

Did you use the standard 44 Cool White LEd's for this (the one with a high powered LED on top and then 4 smaller LED's rotating out in four directions)?

Did you use the 555 Super Bright LED for this one?

Just curious ... did you go with blues or reds?

Thanks for the info ... I am starting to get some ideas now (even if I am just shamelessly stealing them from you). LOL

I use cool white leds for General Illumination.

www.cointaker.com is a great place to buy led's. Im not sure if they made a kit for your game yet though.

I also only use the high powered leds in the flashers, and big inserts under the playfield. If you decide to use all high powered leds , it can get pricey

LOL.....Leding your game is not cheap......but when you start with 1....you cant stop....lol

I did my whirlwind in full led, and it looks great

I like the aqua blue pop bumper caps on BSD. A friend of mine restored one and removed the red caps.

I added black lightning flipper bats w/ yellow rubber to mine. Did that since most have yellow bats and black rubber. Wanted it to be a bit unique. I have the cliffy but have not installed it yet. I plan to eventually get the proto slings as well. Mine is super nice w/ no fade. Challenging game. Congrats, Steve.

Changing the Pop bumber caps to blue, huh?

I like it ... keep 'em coming!

Personally I like the red bumper caps..the whole game is blue already...it's a good contrast. There are pics of the blue ones up on ipdb.

As for the LEDs i the bumpers - the HP ones work great, and I'd recommend the warm whites over the cool ones....they just look brighter under red caps for some reason (probably a color spectrum thing).

For the green under the mist inserts...I'll have to doublecheck, but I think I just used a 1 or 3 LED bulb..nothing fancy. Those are small inserts, and since it's under the playfield, you don't need the HP one w/ the light going everywhere....just a good bright focus up toward the insert.

I did a few different colors of Cliffy posts on my BSD...green, purple, red...I'll take a pic later. There are some pics of people's BSDs on Cliffy's website....borrow from what others have done, or do it up in a way that you like!

4+1 HP is a joke, the 4 on the side is from the HP 1 on top, they just say it's has 5 led's for marketing, they are cheap as hell as far as manufacture goes. In my pops you have to push down and twist, well you push down and twist these the damn top comes right off, had 1 start to smoke in the socket even. I like LED's and I do want some for the pops, but honestly the #47 incandescent bulbs in the pops now are just as bright if not brighter. All G.I. I left incandescents, but inserts and a few in backglass are all LED's.

I never seen those kind of LED's. Are they for pinball machines? The ones I'am refering to are Cointakers 4+1 HP, Which as I stated are not bright at all.

No... they're the raw high power LEDs. You could do whatever you want with them. I'm planning to try some for pinball.

I can't comment on the brightness but there are 5 LEDs on there. One high power and 4 "regular". That's why I posted the link.

Ya they are interesting. How would you convert them to work in a pinball machine?

The same way I make LEDs for pinball now. Use an old socket and wire the LED(s) into it.

It's not the least time consuming project but it lets me create exactly what I want. I usually make up a bunch for each restoration I do. I'm sure a lot of the stuff I make is available already commercially. Some probably isn't.

Some more info on how I build LEDs can be found here:

AWESOME web-site, spent 45 minutes lurking and reading everything there. That little truck was loaded with games, it's a good picture to post in case someone has a question if they dont think there small truck can haul a pinball machine(s). The answer "yes it can"!
