Just picked up a Stern Meteor...what are your opinions of this game?

I just picked up a Stern Meteor pin for what i thought was a decent deal. It had an Alltek Ultimate MPU board in it, so that almost paid for itself right there. It also has a decal on the apron that says "approved for tournament play"...so i wonder if this particular game was used in some kind of pinball tournament? It needs to be shopped real good still and has a weak flipper, but i played a few games last night and i'm still undecided on this one. Of course, i'm partial to the newer pins (late 80's and up). For those of you that played it, what do you think of this game?

I really like meteor! The Stern games from that era are largely underrated (IMO). It's not going to compare with modern games but it holds it's own with other games from the same era.

I've owned a couple of them and I actually have quite a bit of experience with that game so if you have questions I can probably answer them. I'm not sure about the tournament sticker but I've seen it on a few stern games. I assume they were used in tournaments. Obviously :p

Here's an article I wrote on converting that game to WPC style flipper assemblies:

Meteor is one of the few 80's era pins I have kept in my personal gameroom. Others have come and gone but Meteor remains! If you like drop target pins, it is a keeper. I consider Meteor an excellent example of pins from the 80's and out of that generation of games you could say it is a classic. I recall it was a pretty popular title when it was released and did pretty well in the arcades.

Mine has the tournament decal on it as well. I suspect it's more of a marketing thing than anything else. I too have seen similar decals on other Stern titles from that era.

Darn, i thought maybe i had a rare piece :)

Lindsey--I will definately keep you in mind as i go through this machine, as i'm sure i'll have a question or two as i get it up to par. The sound seems a little flakey on it, as i read on www.ipdb.org, that the spinner is supposed to make noise when the balls goes through it, however, on mine, it makes very little sound and is almost quiet at times, so i'm not sure if there are issues with the sound board or not.

Just out of curiosity, what are these going for value wise? I have room, so i'm keeping it for now, but if i ever get in a space crunch, it will probably be the first one to go, unless i get addicted to it.

I've had my meteor for over a year now and still enjoy playing it. I think by having a narrow playfield makes for faster play. Granted older machines are not as exciting as the newer ones, but they are a hell of a lot cheaper.

Average price I've seen for a working machine is $600 give or take.
