so i got a q-bert today. it was working minus some monitor issues. there was swelling like you see in the pics which seems common on these. the sides are in great shape but everything in the middle has some swelling. i have a donor cab where everything in the middle is good but the sides are shot. should i just sand out the swelling and fixer up or should i tear down both cabs and make a solid cab? anybody ever do such a thing before. also the donor cab has the raised letter door but the cab doesn't. debating what i should do.

If you restore the cabinet, don't just sand the swelling off. Soak a spot in Minwax wood hardener, clamp down between wood blocks lined with wax paper and a big c clamp. You can compress a lot of the swelling, with the resin strengthening the repair.

You can switch coin doors to the best cab. Qbert definitely, in my opinion, is a cab that deserves a good restore. They don't look as well in 'patina'. That, and the stuff from arcadeshop is pretty good and they're not too terribly hard to do.

joeycuda, i seen your restore thread but seeing as photobucket went south the pics aren;t available. is there a way to see your progess? should i even consider taking the other cab apart and piecing in the good parts?

Like was mentioned above, the swelling can be taken care of with the Minwax wood hardener. That cabinet material soaks up a LOT of hardener. I didn't use the clamping method as was suggested above, but it sounds like a good idea. I simply flooded all the swells and blisters (sand the blisters a bit first) until they wouldn't soak up much more of the hardener. It takes a LOT of material to saturate them. Once dry, then you can sand, prime, fill, sand, prime, sand, paint. It will take a good amount of spray primer/filler (the Rustoleum automotive primer filler is what I used) but should come out good.

Sorry, no time to dig the pics up. You can do as much at a time as you can soak and clamp. Maybe 4in". You'd be surprised how much it can be compressed back down, but you'll then need to sand and fill and sand flat. I actually have a Qbert that my wife wants done, and the cabinet on its side in my basement. It's swollen from water, but there is fluffing out on the back edge and bottom to fix m

so where it's swollen just go over it with the hardener or sand a little to expose it then use the hardener? i am still debating just pulling the panals off and making the best one honestly.

i would check the battery on the game pcb, and rebuild the power supply and connectors. i have the best kits for it and about every part. bad power kills everything.

this qbert looks like someone already did a power supply mod. i'll post pics soon. still debating if i want to pull the panals off.
