Just got a Nintendo Vs. System (playing blind) where to start?

Hey guys, im still pretty new to the site but ive been thrilled all night because i finally got my first FREE Arcade Machine. YAY! Its a Nintendo Vs. Upright System, with RBI Baseball in it. Anyways just droppped it off at my parents (where all my games are) and i didnt have a camera with me but ill upload pictures of it tomorrow.

Anyways i did some quick tinkering and the game plays blind, however the monitor is getting power and actually makes the hissing static sound when i turn the machine on like its getting power. But the screen is completly black. And when i turn the machine off the middle of the black screen displays that bright explosion like image. (the kind you see when you turn off any conventional Television) i cant explain it nor know what the correct term is for it.

I wanted to check the +5Voltage but i didnt know where the Pcb was, i belive its in that big metal case on the bottom left corner of the cab.

This is the first Vs. Machine ive ever seen in my life, so it looks totally new to me.

As far my arcade tech work goes, ive brought a G07 to life by doing a full monitor rebuild kit, pulled other chassis etc. But this monitor in this nintendo vs. system and setup are totally new to me.

Anyways anyone have any ideas right off the bat? ill get pics up tomorrow of everything.

First couple questions i have are:

1. If the game isnt going to the tube would the monitor just be black like this? or would it be black/white snow flurry static like a normal Television?

2. What monitors are normally in nintendo Vs. Machines"? I couldnt find a nice id tag like the G07 monitors i have encountered have.

3. Common problems for these monitors or machines?

4. Also whats the deal with the Nintendo Vs. machines. Are other nintendo Vs. Boards easily switchable?

Any help would be great. thanks in advance for the help!

What's the deal with all these newer members with Red Tents?

Ooo, Looky My 1000th post.. I've spent to much time on here. :banghead:

:)

the machine probably has a sanyo 20ez monitor, there is maybe a 10 % chance it is a sharp xm monitor.

if the monitor is not getting a signal it will have a white screen due to the inverted colors.

have you left it on for a while. my popeye ct monitor had the exact symptoms you have. black screen, but shows collapse when it is turned off. after about 10 minutes I could barely see the characters running around in attract mode with the brightness up. a cap kit made it beautiful.

vs boards are easily switchable, you can also swap the roms on the board to switch games

If so, it's a Sanyo EZ20, but I don't know what they used in the upright VS systems.

That site has all you need to know about VS.

It's an upright not a red tent........

Anyway, Mine has Sharp XM's in it. I did a full cap kit on both and 1 monitor works great the other blew the flyback after the cap kit. Luckily I found a flyback and it's on it's way.

I noticed the chassis on these were a wee bit harder to remove, but capping them was a breeze.

Whats the deal with the veteran members with a 1000 posts never reading what newbies type LOL, In my second sentence i say its a Nintendo Vs. UPRIGHT, so no its not a red tent. (wish it was tho! lol)

Anyways cool ill check it out tomorrow. Be Awesome if all it was just a cap kit. Ill get some pix up tomorrow. I notice the board is in a metal cage, but then wires run from it to another little board to the left. After reading on Klov you have to have both boards to make a game work correctly and ot just the PCB?

Any new info or links to sites that talk about the Nintendo Vs. would be great.

Im relaly glad to have found one of these, the NES is my all time fav system, i literally have over 700 games for the NES, so its awesome to finally score the arcade thats related to it.

now to find a vs. castlevania parts and a marquee :)

(oh and get this monitor fixed lol)

I try reading it. But every time I get up to the part where it says free and Nintendo vs. I automatically think "Red Tent" (reeeally want one) I get pissed and exit the thread. Hehe. :)

hmmm i guess mine might be a conversion because it dont look exactly like either one of those. It looks like its in a cabinet that looks almost identical to a ms. pac cab, however its a little thicker than a ms. pac cab. Its a light gray color and has side art, CPO, marquee everything to make it look dedicated. And the gray cab looks like it hasnt been painted. If its a conversion its a really really good one, because the side art is prefetly straight on both sides, the cpo doesnt look cut out, and the marquee looks right, so im not sure. Ill post pics tomorrow.

thanks everyone for the insight so far and the links!

there was a vs kit for midway cabs, it very well could have been a pac of some kind

which would mean it may not have a 20ez or sharp xm in it.

the monitor in it honestly looked pretty sophisticated. (at least compared to when i was looking at my G07 and G07 CBO's in my other games lol.

The chassis looked very small in size and open (caps far apart), big black filter cap, and a couple boards plugged in it.

I cant wait to post pics you guys got me really wondering now lol.

I wish it was dedicated, but i couldnt argue with free.

Has a blue power supply in it, and i see some wire nuts had been put on around where some of the wires went into the other little nintendo board.

If it's a conversion in a Pac cab, it will have a little converter board mounted in there somewhere between the monitor and the Vs harness. (seen in the bottom of this cab pictured)

Where do you start with a black screen? Why the brightness knob, of course! Maybe it's just turned down all the way........
