Do you ever get tired of hearing about pac-man, donkey kong, etc... I hate to say it- Defender as well?

Maybe its just me- sorta pissed a solid legend of kage cab fell through my fingers this weekend in my area. It was a dedicated one to be preserved... a nice fix up job I am sorta ready to handle today- I wasn't as a newb a few years ago... a game that probably fell into 48 in 1 hands... :( <sigh>

I dunno there are times I wonder what KLOV/VAPS really means anymore... not that I am a full time member or anything. As a newb I have read the posts here somewhat- and it seems like... convert anything into what you want... 'mr wizzards world'.

What about the dedicated games 'under the surface' people collect? War and horror stories- allowed... I guess this is more an RGVAC style question- back when Rick used to teach people how to 'probe an unknown board' you dont hear about anymore...

Lets hear about a favorite of yours 'outside the mainstream' some sort of (hopefully) dedicated unit- you worked hard at to get 'er going... and stuck with preserving it- why you like it... etc? What does that VAPS thing of an acronym really mean today in 2010? My 2c...

I want to hear about the Robby Rotos and Sea Wolfs and KRAM's or others out there and what you went through- to get it going... even a Sega Turbo or Monaco GP.

Just something that offers some vital info to keep things going outside the mainstream games everyone sees a cash value and 'flip it for money' associated with. Something instead of - asteroids deluxe now a 48 in 1? Does it make some sense? I thought so... at least to some of you out here- I'm sure...

Charlie Brown - over and out...

I've noticed Mr Brentradio and what he does- and props for him... Hellcading- is not the answer me thinks.... :|

I haven't even seen a Legend of Kage cab since the 80s. I really like that game and would add it to the collection in a heartbeat.

Donkey Kong is a favorite, so I don't ever get tired of hearing about it. My favorite recent addition is a Neo Geo 4-slot. When I bought it, the cab was completely empty, no wiring harness or anything. We put it back together before I hauled it home. He had taken it apart to consolize (sp?) it, and never finished it.

I no longer have any interest in these games as a valuable commodity. I just want to own games that I enjoy playing. It makes it a lot harder to find a game to buy because most games for sale seem to be ones that you would only buy to flip.

Yesterday

I was digging through a warehouse and saw a dedicated Red Alert.. Don't see those everyday.. It looked like total sh$t.. Kinda like it was living at the bottom of a river for 10 years.. Also ran into some other weird titles.. Problem was, the op had them stored in an unlocked location where people have stolen and smashed most of the stuff.. It was really sad :(

Agree with the OP here. Not enough love for some of the other classics or even later games. Pooyan, Mappy, Dig Dug II, Tower of Druaga, Phozon from the 80s... all you hear about is DK or Asteroids. And Mortal Kombat has conquered the 90s segment to the point where a post about Soul Calibur, Virtual On, or Mr. Driller seems like a rarity. It's a sad sad world we live in.

Show me all the posts about people HERE converting games ....what the hell are you talking about?

I love obscure titles.. Some of the better known games I don't have a clue how they became popular..!? Heck, some of my "out of the mainstream" games in my collection are my favorites like Speed Buggy (aka Buggy boy) and Crazy climber. I never heard these games before I started collecting and I sure think they beat Pac-man and Donkey kong! (no offense DK, Pac-man lovers)

Once in a while when I bring an title up like Food fight, Balloon fight or Tapper in a arcade related conversation and folks reply with a clueless "say wha..?" phrase. They don't know what there missing. Ha. :)

There are a few people that enjoy putting XXX-in-1's into cabs/cocktails for their own reasons, the bad people murder a great cab in order to do it. Smart people that choose to do it, usually either use the current setup(wiring, control panel, ect....) or do it to a cab that is way beyond bringing back to life. Some even build their own cabs. It's their money their choice I suppose. Heck, I even have a 60-in-1 cocktail that the neighbor just bought from me last night. It had 1 extra button added to it on one side, on a control panel with no artwork, that can easily be remade is so desired. I see no problems with the XXX units, as long as you're not totally destroying the cab it's in. The reason I loved the board, is I'm not a huge DK, Pac Man, Space Invaders fan like a lot of people here, but it gave me those games if I needed them. Saves me the trouble of having to get a fully dedicated game, I'll leave those to the collectors who want those particular games.

I'm more of a fan of the "not so common" games myself, there are a lot of great games that are over looked, but those mentioned above are and have always been great selling games. Anybody and everybody knows Pac Man, DK, and so on, so the retain the value to the common mass. If you have one, that will sell a heck of a lot quicker than say Bad Dudes because it's what people know. I don't even know if I'm still on point or not here, I'm just rambling :)

Edit: Forgot to mention, other than the cocktail, every game I own/will own are all dedicated games. And the cocktail's sold, so technically I have all dedicated games :D

I would like to put forth the theory that the reason why we rarely hear about some games is because they are rare, and few members own them.

I know... it's a radical theory.

There are a lot of klovers who give all three of those games a lot of love!

Welcome back hawk, welcome back

well shiiit. I guess no one will want to hear that i might get a dk cocktail tuesday... :(

Pics or it didn't happen......and then we will all cheer for you :D There's nothing wrong getting those games, everyone has their own likes and should run with it, that's what it's about.

Edit: And don't feel bad, I talked about my new toy getting home at the beginning of August, and not even a pat on the back. I think they're all scared of the game, lol.

Well Anteater rules, but who am I going to talk to about that? There are like three whole people with upright Anteater machines... IN THE WORLD!!! (me being one of them...).

It's easy to talk about DK and SI and Pac-man because everyone and his brother has a cab...

ChuckBrown, I agree that games like Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Defender, etc. do get mentioned a lot here, and yes it does get kinda boring. But I think it's because those games were so popular back in the day and enough of them were made that it's easier to find them still today.

I don't agree that most members here are converting dedicated cabs into 60-in-1's. I read about more people actually trying to restore classics than convert them.

But JAMMA cabs on the other hand, like Street Fighter especially, don't get too much love here and those who prefer the "classics" probably wouldn't hesitate to slap a 60-in-1 in them. So I can see what you're talking about in that regard.

I picked up a Z-back cab with a non-working multi-board in it. It used to be a SF2 CE, but was converted with a shitty checkered overlay and all the buttons were removed except for one per each player. Luckily I had a SF2 Turbo bezel and marquee and some extra buttons to "restore" the cab to it's original state. But it still won't get as much love here as the 80's classics you're so tired of hearing about.

Based on most of the threads in these forums, you could say it's more of a classics restoration society than overall arcade games restoration society. I don't think as many will talk about candy cabs or other post 80's games. They tend to stick to what they know or care about. Again, the "classics" here.

A recent cab/game I resurrected is the Nintendo Super System. All it really needed was monitor chassis to get it working. I don't think these types of cabs get much love on these forums. But the games on this cab are SNES and not actual arcade releases, so I can understand that aspect. But it's still an arcade cab nonetheless.

Seems like you were a little mad you didn't get that Legend of Kage. But why are you so sure it's going to get converted/raped by some one?

As for me, if I found a nice classic cab like Asteroids Deluxe that was missing the monitor, pcb and wiring I think it would be cheaper for me to just convert it then spend a lot of money on a vector monitor, working pcb and harness. At least by converting it to JAMMA I could get some use out of it right away and have a cab with nice art. But actually, rather than convert a good cab, I would want to sell it to some one who actually wanted it.

I wanna kill kittens every time I see or hear Star wars or Tron mentioned. Also the first game everyone always asks me about when talking about my collection......Do you have Pac/Ms.pac man!!!??? I get so tired of hearing it. You can't think of any other game off the top of your head besides that out of thousands of titles?? lol "end rant"

I also noticed a large number of posts on these forums about multiboards, and it bothered me. I see some people that buy a cab with a bad board, put a multi in it, and say it's as good as new without trying to fix the original board. That pisses me off. I have seen some pretty good multi-setups such as the smash-tv/total carnage cab of fatherpain's that I helped him setup, but that cab has a 2-way jamma adapter, so no wires were cut, and no holes drilled. Plus, it has the original boards of both games inside. That, I am fine with. I have been fixing up a centipede recently (yes, I know it's a common game). I don't even really like centipede, and know I could buy a working one on the cheap, but I still put in a new monitor, bought UOS bezel, monitor surround, board, ar2, marquee, and control panel for it to get it back to an original state. I still need some wiring for it, and I need to strip the sides to see if the art underneath needs to be replaced. But, I still am doing it regardless of people saying it's not worth the trouble.
