Hey guys - just picked up a R91 jukebox combo (45/6 CD changer). Looks and works good, but of course needs some TLC.

Two issues that I am having right now -
1 - the left speaker seems to have noticeably more highs than the right. I verified that both are set to high for treble on the amp. The speakers both appear fine and I get sound out both - just not the same sound... Again, it's not terrible, but certainly noticeable.
2 - the 6 CD changer plays fine as long as the volume is down, but as soon as you even get to moderate volume, it starts skipping. I know this was a bad design from the factory, but could it be a CD player problem as well?

Also, any good source for replacement parts like buttons, panels, etc? Mine is in good shape, but I am probably going to do a complete restoration. Thanks!

Hi,

With regards to the sound is the effect just on records or on CD as well?

The jukebox should be fitted with the standard 130 watt Rowe Ami amplifier make sure that the 13 pin jumper plug with its links ahave the following links:-

1 to 3
2 to 7 (blue wire)
5 to 9
6 to 8

The cartridge should be wired in phase as standard, the way that the jukebox achieves it enhanced bass is because the output of the amplifier is invertered on one channel.

Thanks Alan, the sound is both CD and Record. Additionally, there don't seem to be a whole lot of mids or highs, just lows. The music plays fine and would be passable in a bar - if that makes sense, but in a room with no other noise, you can, in my opinion, clearly hear that the lows are overtaking the sound. The bass is set on low and the treble is set on high for both channels.

I looked in the manual, and can't seem to find the jumpers you mentioned above. Where would they be located? Also - any idea how to stop the skipping CD player? I can't imagine it was like that from the factory, which leads me to believe either some kind of dampening is missing, or the player has issues. Again, it plays fine as long as the volume doesn't get turned up very much, and then it skips like crazy...

just going over basic stuff, you did check the LEFT - RIGHT balance knob on the amp, right? could be that it's set off to one side. the 13-pin jumper "below" the balance knob, toward the front of the cabinet on the amplifier.

got mine home a few hours ago and i've been futzing with it since. it was set to mono so i switched it to stereo and lost one channel. checked everything at the amp side (including the jumper wires mentioned above,) and nothing. then i traced the PHONO plug cable back to the mechanism and noticed that one of the wires had pulled loose, probably when i removed it to pull the mech out. connected it again and bam! there was my right channel back.

I think the sound issue was a combination of things. The slider switches for bass and treble were dirty and they needed to be adjusted right. Still have to check the 13 pin connector. Sound is much better. Still have skipping CD when volume is up. Haven't found a fix yet. Now I gotta look for some vinyl!:)

Did you figure out the CD skipping issue? I have an R-93 that does the same thing...thinking about putting a couple of dampening sheets down to help with the vibration or trying to mount the CD player in a new location.

Nope, still does it every once and a while. I thought of the same thing - I have some Dynamat left over from a stereo install a few years ago - I might try that. I'll let you know if it works! Cheers,
Ray
