Just Bought DK Jr. -- Need Restoration Help!!

You need to get out the bondo and start "leveling" the surface! If you just prime and paint it will look like doo doo.

Shoot, I didnt get any bondo from the store!

At this point I kinda just want to get it done, will it look like "do-doo" if I strip the laminate THEN sand, prime, paint?

Bondo, sando, bondo, sand, bondo, sand!!!! Then Zinssers Bin Primer right over the laminate!!

That is EXCACTLY what this is!!!!

Alright I now have the bondo!!!

I'm going to start this whole process soon but I'm still unsure about dismantling the guts!

How do I take out everything (especially the monitor) safely?

Go to youtube and find a video on how to properly discharge a monitor.........
Take the Bezel out...... there is a "slide mechanism" inside on the roof of the cab with a wing nut on it....undo the wing nut and pull in the slide, this will help release the bezel.....
Undo all the plugs making sure to CAREFULLY mark them with tags! Until I know a machine, I make 2 tags, one for the male end, and one for the female end! A-A... B-B.....C-C and so forth and so on.....then when you put things back together you will know RIGHT where they go!! Also any nuts/bolts, I put in a mini zip lock bag, carefully marked where they came from.....
Monitor should lift right out the back.......

Thanks, that helps a lot!

Is this primer ok?

Yeah I would think so? Never used that kind before? But sounds like it is an pretty much like Zinssers BIN???

I looked and looked at my HD for the Zinssers but no dice :( Hopefully this will do......I'm starting the dismantling in 45 minutes! Hopefully pictures later tonight.

Do you all think that 1 coat of primer should do it...or should I just do with 2. I've heard mixed things on the forums :p

From the looks of your cab, your going to have a while of bondo/sanding before your primering, but I always do 1 coat sand, and put a second coat on.....sand again, and paint..........

Ok so I FINALLY got around to applying the bondo! I'm going to be doing some sanding in about 20 minutes or so, hopefully it will turn out nice the first time....but I expect at least one more go ahead with bondo.

My only question thus far is about the three seemingly pointless screws that are on the side of my cab. I see them on a lot of DK's....I was planning on just leaving them there, but would they get in the way of my side art and make that look ugly?

Any other tips/feedback welcome :)

You can fill those three holes or leave them like I did. Not needed unless you planning on converting it to a horizontal Nintendo game.

Awesome, I didnt really feel like taking them out :p

They wont interfere with the side art at all will they?

Just finished the first round of sanding and added the touch-up bondo....last round of sanding and priming to come tomorrow :)

Can anyone tell me how to remove the buttons from the cp? I removed all the screws attaching the CPO but the buttons still wont budge.

Should just be the nut on the button under the cp and they should pop out.

Thank you, I actually figured that out right after my post :p

I have a DK with side art that goes over the screws, it actually looks kinda cool imo....would I have to cut the holes in the side art for it to sit flush against the screws?

If you leave the bolts it will make bumps in the sideart. You could just pull the bolts and leave the holes and be careful when applying the art to cover them.

Glue dowels in those 3 extra holes and then finish with bondo.
They are not needed and it looks like crap with those 3 extra bolts.
It also looks like crap without the bolts because you will be able to see indentations in the side art from the empty holes.
Fill them and have a nice smooth surface on your new side art.
The other 2 need to go through the side art.
