Just Bought DK Jr. -- Need Restoration Help!!

This one looks pretty good on a Mario Bros, Pretty sure they are the same color?

http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=148359&highlight=paint+code

you sir are a lifesaver, that is EXACTLY the right color :)

Looks like im heading to home depot tomorrow!

Also, when I'm taking off the old laminate and painting, I'm assuming I should probably gut the cabinet. I have NO idea how to go about doing that, are there any tutorials that could point me in the right direction?

I always start by taking the monitor out... make sure you do some research on how to safely discharge a monitor. In a DK jr should be a couple bolts on each side.
Also you are to need to remove the coin door, and marquee ect ect.
Even after doing this plenty of times, I still label everything when removing, makes things SO much easier going back together.....

Ok so I now have the paint that Zork2 linked me to (thanks again, hopefully it looks as good as the picture!)

Just a few questions, first is there a specific primer I should be using? I think I have some laying around but I dont know what brand.

Secondly, what is the best method to remove the orange laminate? Its kinda peeling all over the place so I could probably just use my fingers and maybe a blade of some sort.

Thanks (oh and I'm also looking for a blue or red cabinet to house my new DK PCB)

I'd personally see if you can secure the laminate that is peeling up with some adhesive (wood glue and tape?)... Then rough up the cabinet with some 220 grit... Then I'd repair the areas with bondo... Then head to your professional paint show and tell them you'll be painting over laminate and ask for a primer that will "Grab" the formicaish type material.

There surprisingly arent that many areas that need fixing with bondo, the only problem is the laminate. Im confused by your post, are you suggesting I paint over the laminate? Im missing a fair amount of it, so wouldn't that create an uneven surface? I was just planning on taking all of it off and prime/paint/maybe buy some vinyl from thisoldgame.com. I already have the correct (I hope) color paint.

Also, is it necessary that I remove all the innards before I paint/prime it?

If you can get all the laminate off w/o making it worst then I guess you could do that. Most people just level off any bad areas with bondo, sand, re-bondo, sand some more, prime and paint.

Oh, and rich's vinyl is suppose to be an exact match. But, you still need to paint the sides.

so I would, in order:

1. strip off old laminate
2. Bondo/Sand as needed
3. Prime
4. Two coats of paint
5. Consider buying vinyl (I hear its expensive)
6. Enjoy a nice looking DK Jr.

Also should I empty the cabinet before doing all of that? Its going to be a bit of work and though I could do it, if its not necessary.... :)

Taken from gamestencils.com.
Paint codes from Lowes (color matched from a chip from a cabinet): Lowes Enterprise brand semi Gloss Enamel (oil based)
First Tinting: 116-23.5 / 111-2Y9.5 / 113-14.5
Second Tinting: 113-30

I'd leave the laminate on. Just fill the holes/missing spots with bondo and sand smooth! It'll take you several cycles of this process to get things looking good. Then you can go over the entire cab, laminate and all with a 220 grit paper to rough it up a bit. I then use "Zinssers BIN Primer" right over the laminate. Not sure if HD has it, but just about any other hardware store does. I get mine at Sears Hardware. Sand by hand with a block with 220 and put a second light coat on. Sand again with 220, and your paint will go on smooth right over the BIN primer. I have done this on MANY cabs, works like a charm every time!!!

do you think that the coloring will look wierd if I do that?

Heres what I used http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=148359&highlight=paint+code

its the one you linked me to

The color should look fine, however the paint will have a "texture" to it.
Original laminate on nintendo cabs is smooth. All my restorations have a texture to the paint. I would suspect the only way not to have a texture and get things smooth like the originals is to spray the paint on. I don't have a sprayer. However if you take your time, use a foam roller, and do light coats, rolling all the paint in the same directions to avoid roller lines, you can get pretty good results!!
Here is a pic of my nintendo punchout cab! Bondo, sanding, zinssers, and rolled on Sherwin Williams paint, it turned out FANTASTIC!! Judge for yourself, IMO black is the most difficult paint to make flawless

Ok guys, I'm getting ready to take Jr. apart and prime it this afternoon!

I'm a bit nervous about taking everything out, can anyone link me to a step by step guide or something to dismanteling a nintendo cab?

...Is doing the priming/painting with everything still in there a big no-no?

Is that the primer you were talking about?

Im using it with the Behr paint from HD, latex based I think

^^ need that answered too

Document each step with a camera and take lots of notes. Really..I think you can leave the wiring harness attached to the inside of the cab..just remove the monitor, boards, power supply, coindoor, and control panel.

Well I'm about to start priming, however, are you all SURE I should just paint over the orange laminate instead of removing it? Some part of my brain is telling me that doing so will leave an uneven surface....

You need to get out the bondo and start "leveling" the surface! If you just prime and paint it will look like doo doo.
