Just bought a NEO GEO. School me.

I sent the cart back and Jammaboards said the cart is working perfectly in their machine. Crap! That means my mobo is wonky with the multis. Looks like I'm in the market for a mobo that plays nice with XXX-1's. Next stop, ePay. <sigh> The whole point of this was to simply jam a multi in and play tons of games. Now it's been over a month and I'm no where closer to some Super Dodge Ball goodness.

Yep, got a new cart and it's doing the exact same thing. Looks like I need a new MVS mobo. Can anyone point me at a particular version that works well with the multi carts?

Did you ever try out some regular carts on this board?

Ok, here's where it stands. A few nights ago I did some reading and found that the MV-1B is considered pretty reliable when it comes to multi carts. I checked out eBay and found one for less than $100 so I took a chance and bought it. Two minutes later I get a pm from Troy (mtZRcade) who makes me a generous offer which I hoped I wouldn't have to take him up on. The board arrived yesterday and I hooked it up. Booted but with bad graphics on everything. Hmmm, I noticed when I put it in that one of the dips was set to "on" so I figured what the hell and switched it to "off". Works perfectly now! Sweet! Now I need to sell my other board which is 100% working and according to Troy (who I bought it from) it was nos, it sure looks brand new. To top it off, I received the NEO GEO marquee I ordered today and they included a Metal Slug X cart since it took almost a month to ship. I'm swimming in NEO GEO goodness over here.

One other question for anyone who reads this far, are there any must have games that aren't on the 161-1 cart? I mean, any completely awesome games that just aren't on the multis yet?

I don't even know what is on the multis, but all the Metal Slugs and Neo Turf Masters are pretty sweet.

Twinkle Star Sprites is apretty fun puzzle/shooter game - despite the name. It is on the 120-in-1, but I don't think it is on the 161 since it wasn't on the 150.

The 161-1 has all of the Metal Slugs plus additional versions of those Metal Slugs so plenty of Metal Slugs is what I'm sayin'. It also has Neo Turf Masters, I'll have to try that, looks fun. No Twinkle Sprites, I'll have to look into that.

The 138-in-1 has the best game selection, imo.

Edit: Some people don't like the loading times, but they're not that bad.

Don't make me wish I had bought a different multi! ;)
What's on the 138-1 that isn't on the 161-1? That's the beauty of NEO GEO, you can really branch out and try different things without buying whole cabs.

I'm still looking for a nice MVS-4 but the one thing I like about the 138-in-1, despite the supposed long load times, is the ability to remove games from the menu so all the chaff can be edited out. 161 doesn't have this feature.

I don't think the 138-in-1 has Nam-1975 which I remember being a neat game.

Can you replace the edited out games with something else if you have the roms? Would be a pretty sweet feature. I know someone that had one of the multi-carts and when I checked it out it was just peppered to hell with all those annoying hack titles. :p

I've said it before about these, but I tend to avoid them personally. I like the little, slightly nerdy, aspect of having to edit the line up on my machines every once in a while to make things fresh. Things get old quickly when most of the library is right there at a push of a button.

That's why I want the MVS-4 so I can still change the line-up. The obvious choices (to me) would be finding Magician Lord, Samurai Shodown V and ... I don't know, Baseball Stars Professional? There's the 'chase' slot!
