Just bought a NEO GEO. School me.

I just grabbed a 4-slot MVS. Well, I put the deposit in.. but I will be picking it up next week when I borrow a truck.

I've been doing my best to learn as much as possible about these. One nice find was a local company (Northern NJ) that makes really nice mini-marquees for the NeoGeo MVS Marquees. $5 a pop, and they are bold, and bright on a nice UV paper stock to stop future fading. Once I sell off the ones a don't want, and decide on my final 4, I will order a handful.

Maybe we can help each other out in the near future. Good luck with your new purchase man.:004_sbiggrin:

One thing to realize is that the Multi-Carts are only compatible with the original USA bios chips, not universal or japanese bios. OR at least that is what most of the shops online warn about the Multi-Carts.

100-1
108-1
150-1
161-1 Are all pretty much the same except a few more games added to each new cart. Mostly each one gets discontinued and is replaced, but with the same game list with like a few additions.

138-1 Have a funky harness adapter that has to go in between the mobo and cabinet harness for the frontloader screen. Really only work with the 1 slotters and have issues with 2/4/6 slotters. It has League Bowling, one of my favs.....but the others don't =(

Tried again tonight. It booted up to some game immediately and then froze. I rebooted and after a while I got the following..."Work RAM Error - Address 0010EDF0 Write 5555 Read 2000"
After that I couldn't get it to boot past a garbage screen. I looked at the motherboard and the thing looks brand new although there's a sticker on it that says that it was tested in 1995. Again, the Bust-a-Move game that came with it works fine, boots right up. There are some dip switches all set to off and a pot on the mobo. Would those do anything useful? Where on the mobo would I see if it's a US, universal, or japanese bios? Am I going to need to replace the mobo?

I never heard anything about the BIOS having to be US. If anything, a European BIOS is better. Thats what my MV-1C has and it runs my 108-1 without a hitch. The MV-1F with US BIOS I had did not like this cart and did not like the 48-1 I ran before. Theres also a UniBIOS out there that's supposed to be pretty good, but I havent tried one. Not sure if my BIOS chip is soldered or socketed anyway.

The issues are usually with games resetting, not freezing up like what you describe. You could have a bad cart. Take some photos of your PCB and cart.

Here are some pics. Anything jumping out at you as to what to check next?

neo 161 in 1

my 1 slot looks identical to yours and my 161 in 1 cart works fine on it. I get some weird garbage on the screen while the games are loading but they run fine afterwards.

I am using my 150-in-1 multicart (same family as the 161-in-1) with a UniBios without issue.

Check your voltages if you've not done so. Other than that... I can only suggest that you possibly have a bad cart.

Jammaboards site says nothing about it not working on certain board versions, so they should take it back regardless. Get another one, and if it still doesn't work sell your working one slot and buy a different version one slot.

I might change out the switching power supply. I get 5.1 or so on the +5 but only 11 or so on the +12. If I turn it up, the +5 goes way up.

Adjust it by the voltage at the game PCB... 5.0 to 5.1V or so. Hell with the +12V, it's only for the audio amp, and if it's only 11V... no big deal.

If it really bothers you, it's probably just a tired filter cap on the 12V line in the power supply. Replace it with a low ESR type.

Then it must be a bad cart. I like Horseboy's idea of returning this one to make sure the cart is good. If it still doesn't work, I'll buy a new mobo and sell the old one. What a pain.

You have an MV-1C which is what I use now, newer and should run the multicarts fine. Sounds more and more like a bad cart, voltages are fine and other games are working.

From the pics online, it actually looks like I have an MV-1FZ. Any known issues with multi carts in those?

can't you find another machine in driving distance to test?

Good question. All I know is mine is an MV-1C and looks exactly like yours. Before that I had an older MV-1F. It was about twice the size and had a bunch of extra inputs for dedicated cabinets, like for the memory card slots and LED displays. It didnt like the multicarts, and my cabinet is a conversion so I didnt need the extras anyway. Since moving on to this one I've had no problems.

If you need a guinea pig ship your board and cart over here, Ill mix and match and share the results, just pay the shipping, if you want to go that route.
