Just a short rant about Sega's arcade manufacturing techniques

I HATE THE WAY SEGA WIRED/CONSTRUCTED THEIR CABINETS!!! I have disassembled a Zaxxon, Monaco GP Mini, and now I am restoring this Star Trek, and all of them have proved to be EXTREMELY frustrating in terms of wiring, connectors, board removal, and overall 'ease' of servicing. UGH!!!! Theyre heavy, the wiring harnesses make NO sense whatsoever, the components inside are crammed tight as hell, and UGH!!! I HATE them!!! Dont get me wrong, I love the games as far as playing them goes (well, except Zaxxon, blech...), but these games must have been complete pains in the ass when they broke down back in the day.

Not to mention I have painfully racked my head on the Star Trek roof multiple times since Ive had it. But maybe thats just my cockpit newbness....

Its about time to sent that Star Trek my direction:D

Thank you for saying this! I have been trying to fix up my Time Soldiers game (in a converted Zaxxon cabinet) but everything is so crammed in the machine I can barely worked. I accidently pulled one of the pins out of the wiring harness as I was trying to fix it!

Zaxxon is a horrible cabinet. Getting the boardset out of that game is something I NEVER want to do ever again.

Yeah, the Zaxxon style cabinets are a real butthole to work on. Hard to get to the PCB or power supply. Star Trek being the same cabinet is the same way but the PCB is a card rack. I absolutely hate those things. I am told that it is mounted under the seat in the cockpit version. Throw in the fire prone GO8 monitors and Star Trek can be a real bitch but fun to play. I've thought that Afterburner uprights would be a real PITA also. Hang on should be right up there as well.

Ok this is slightly off topic...but I was adjusting my Asteroids monitor once. I was reaching around the beck while stretching around to watch the effect I was having. It kept really tweaking the screen every time I twisted the knob and it was bugging me. Then when I went back and looked I had missed the knob and was twisting a transistor that was sticking up off the board. DOH!

I have had better luck reaching through the coin door, maybe I have long arms or something......:p
