King! ... of nasty

Here's Jungle King 141508:

I've been meaning to get started on this project forever. The cab is mostly OK. Some wear and swelling. There is a slot cut into the kickplate for a bill acceptor (now gone). The whole thing is very dirty.

The marquee and bezel are in good shape. Not much flaking. The wooden base is too rotten to reuse. Will need to make a new one:

Most of the internal parts are still here. The power supply is missing. It was probably replaced with a switcher at some point. There's no way the old game board still works. The monitor looks good:

The original harness has been hacked up to accommodate some jamma board (maybe?). The wiring is pretty sloppy. There's a light bulb installed inside for some reason:

There's a ton of rodent/animal damage:

Wow bleh. Mice, mud daubers, and wasps. There's an earring in the mouse nest:

The control panel and CPO are in good shape. There are extra buttons on this panel. Not sure if I want to keep them. They were actually installed pretty well. They would be really handy if I get the HSS multi kit:

I've decided to keep the original side art. I think it has a nice patina... and I really don't want to strip and re-stencil. There is some swelling wood around the edges as usual for these Taito cabs, but not too bad.

I'd like to fix the game boards. However, If I can't get them to work, I have a working backup set. It will be great to play Jungle King (and Elevator Action!) in an original cab.

That looks like my Atari Baseball. Infested! 🤢

Maybe the light bulb was put in there to keep the "cage" warmer for his pets?
Check the bottom for water damage to see if any fish were kept in there!

these golden era Taitos have to be amongst the most vulnerable to environmental damage, what a mess. but big ups for preserving the exterior, it seems the insides will keep OP plenty busy (y)

Thoughts During Disassembly...

Example of the side art condition around the edges:

I think its fine. Very age-appropriate.

The monitor with its interesting cab adapter frame. This WG 4903 chassis and the tube look surprisingly good. Should work fine after a cap kit.

I've never seen a door switch defeated like this. Also, best relay wiring ever:

So what's up with this Radio Shack Lamp Module? Turns out, this is cooler than I expected. This device is part of a family of products that work using the X10 protocol. It sends control signals to X10 compliant devices through power lines. Basically the first smart plugs.

I'm guessing this cab was converted to an 8-liner long ago. The beer carton was the bill collector, and the lightbulb helped the proprietor see all the money inside the cab when he collected it. Who knows...

It looks like the original harness tie-downs were stapled onto the cab (rather than using screws):

Coin door. Another item that looks way better than expected. I just need to fix one hole in the lower corner:
JK.2.6.jpg

The game boards look very fixable. Some strange green corrosion goo under one of the edge connectors:

Disassembly thoughts continued...

Behind the marquee. The speaker is too deteriorated to reuse:

The cab is much better already. No longer a hantavirus hazzard hopefully:
JK.3.2.jpg

The inside front corners are really swollen with moisture, even though the outside of the cab is OK in these areas. I'm guessing this is rodent urine damage.

Some of the stains from the mud dauber nests/swelling/filth will need more cleaning, and probably some paint touch-up.
