I recently acquired a Taito green cabinet that sports a Jungle King marquee. The game has the jungle boy in it that has a pet project thing with his hair coloring. It also has the Jungle King bezel.
However, when you insert a quarter and hit 1 player, jungle boy goes to do his jungle yell and he is quite hoarse. There is no 'Tarzan' sound. Also, in attract mode the screen comes up and says 'Jungle Hunt'.
I am thinking this is all a matter of Eproms. However, without removing every single Eprom and reprogramming them all. I am curious if there is just 1 maybe 2 that affect just these two areas.
Anyone done much work with one before? I'd like to get it 100% Jungle King.

Sounds like you have a jungle hunt pcb in a jungle king cab.. Swap all the roms or pick up a JK pcb. As that's pretty much your only options.

Are you sure about that? Check out the Eproms that are in there. They look like Factory Eproms.

How is it a Jungle Hunt with a Tarzan character that doesn't yell, swings from vines, not ropes, does not wear a pith hat. I'm mystified by the MIXING though of the Jungle Hunt attract mode and Tarzan boy in there at the same time. Is there anything on the boardset that tips you off that it's a Jungle Hunt or King? I take it KN means King?

Alright, so originally I wanted to ask if there were a site that held the actual Jungle King file with Chip locations. As I'm viewing my images of the pcbs, the Rom numbers seem to match the Jungle Hunt rom image numbers. I pulled the Mame Rom of JungleK (Japanese) and those are totally new numbers. So I have no idea where those Eproms would sit on the pcb's. There's also no CRC checksum numbers in the file. Is there a site somewhere that has the official Roms for Jungle King with some helpful information for reprogramming like Rom locations, and checksum comparisons? Was kind of hoping this'd be a quick repair/fix but if not, I'll just throw the sucker in storage and pull out a Lunar Lander project that needs assembled. Pick back up on this later, hopefully when I have some more room to work. :D

Those three on the bottom left (57,58,59) are for the sound CPU.
pull/read/check/swap those and you'll probably get your yell back.

Both the Tarzan guy and the splashscreen Jungle KING/HUNT graphics are in EPROMS on that top daughter board. It's super weird that you have a mixed bag with the HUNT sign and the KING boy. Especially since they don't look altered.

I know they were sued for using Tarzan like figure and the yell and changed it to the guy with the hat. Sounds like you have a little of both. I would agree, switch the roms back and get the Tarzan yell back!

Yes, it is wierd. Maybe this is one of the boards in the burroughs case where they tried to say, hey if we take out the yell, and we change the title, will that do?
But anyhow, thanks kstillin for that information. Although the roms that cover like, 59-1 are Jungle King (mame junglek)and 57-1,58-1 are covered in the Mame Jungle Hunt (mame jungleh). That's even wierder.
That's kind of why I was looking for a central site with -'all these roms go specifically in Jungle King'.
The eproms on the daughterboard 49, 50, 54 aren't even in the mame junglek file..

I have one of each board and the JK board isn't working right now and the JH board works like a charm. I really want the JK over the JH so I wonder if I swap out these roms if I can get it to swap over for me. It's worth tinkering around a little bit.

Swap ALL the EPROMs over and you'll have your Jungle King.
You really only have to swap the program ROMs on the back board and the sound ROMs in the corner of the top board. The daughter board (graphics) can be swapped as a whole unit.

I swapped all the roms mentioned and JK is working now. The only problem I notice now is the graphics are darker. I don't have the bright pink, green and yellow I'm used to seeing. I just don't know if this is how the earlier game looked or not. And maybe I just need to adjust the monitor now. I mean, the rocks look almost brown or black.

Also, the sound is a little different from how JH sounds once you complete the level. This may be normal but I'm just familiar enough to know for sure.

There are four full levels in all and each one has a different color scheme.
I think the first set looks similar between JK and JH.

Bump the brightness a little.

I'm almost wanting to just go back to JH. It's perfected color wise and sound wise. And JK is so weird where the guys have different color hair every time they move on to the next level.

I did compare the differences in MAME to see which version I have and I do think it's the regular JK and not a older version but I'll have to compare it again since I'm home.

Edit: Ok, I just went out and played a game of JK and the colors look better. Not sure why they were so dark the first time I played it but they are good enough to where I have a good working JK now. LOL I just need to compare the sounds in MAME again but I think it's just the latest JK release. The monkey's on the vine sound like a chimp compared to a ape sound in JH.
