I picked up a JD recently and it had the L4 ROM. I went to IPDB, downloaded the L7 ROM, burned and installed. The games seems to play somewhat normally (first ball in plays fires two balls and instant replay awarded) but when I go into the diagnostics to run some tests it acts strange.

For instance when I go into the solenoid tests the planet and magnet arm move ever-so-slightly, over and over no matter what solenoid is selected to test and the selected solenoid to test never fires. But when I play a game all solenoids fire when they should.

I know the trough optos are known for shooting out multiple balls but I checked for cold solder joints and it didn't do it on the L4 ROM so I think it is safe to rule that out.

One thing I did notice is that on IPDB there is the 'Game ROM L-7' and then the 'PinMAME RomSet (L-7)' (which has the game ROM and sound ROMs). I downloaded both and noticed that the game ROM alone is 386KB while the PinMAME game ROM is 365KB.

I guess my question is why the discrepancy between the PinMAME and regular game ROM sizes?

If Judge Dredd has two plastic switch tips that get pushed in when the coin door is closed, then you must push them in in order to get the coils to work in test mode with the door open. If it only has a single switch then this is not the case. Worth a look.

That was it... I closed the coin door and the solenoids and flashers fired in test mode. I guess they made the coin door being closed a requirement somewhere between L-4 and L-7. Thanks.
