JP's Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 Restore (scratch build) UMK3

Finally finished the UMK3 and it is actually the last build I had on my list. I set out a couple years back to restore a few of the favorites from my 90's arcade days so with this one complete I am finally "done" ... not sure what I will get into next but it's kind of weird not having multiple projects stacked up and waiting on me.

I didn't post any raw UMK3 cabinet pics this time but i built the cab at the same time and in same fashion as my MK/MKII cabs and there are some more detailed photos here:

As with my other builds I bump up the monitor to the 27" Makvision CRT and use a new corresponding bezel. I bought several of these three years ago for specific use on these project... glad I did because the price since then has doubled.

The Marquee and CPO overlay are NOS but the side art and control panel box are my own that I built and printed locally. I think it all blends together quite nicely.

I paint the entire cabinet inside and out in satin black and then I wrap the exterior front of the machine with 3M satin black vinyl.

All of the original metal brackets, coin doors, speaker grill etc. were sandblasted and re-powdercoated.

New locks, LEDs in Coindoor as well as LED Marquee fixture retrofitted to work with existing harness plugs. New Joystics (Eruo IL from paradise arcade) ... new buttons and freshly cut lexan CPO

probably other goodies that I am forgetting but let me know of any questions.

I have to say, you go all out on your restores. Awesome job once again! You mind sharing what Led light fixture you use for your marquees?

That... is a thing of beauty. Well done.

Super slick job here!! I'm curious since you built this from scratch, how did you do the speakers and what speakers did you use? I only ask because MK3 and MK4 used a slightly different speaker setup than MK1 and MKII and I'm wondering if you kept true to that with your builds? I plan to convert one of my MKII cabinets (the less pretty of the two) into an MK3 and I'm having to cut a larger hole to replace the small tweeter with a full range speaker. I'm guessing sound-wise, this would make quite the difference. I seem to remember MK3 having a much more full (and loud) sound in the arcades than the previous two games.

Also, regarding the artwork...I've been looking around at various sellers both here on KLOV and on eBay to see who has the better prints and pricing, but yours looks amazing too! You mentioned you got the art printed locally, but what files did you work with? I haven't been able to find any super high quality artwork that I could get printed locally and was wondering how you did it?!

thanks for the kind feedback...

for speakers on the MKII and MK3 I used the same setup that is present in MK4 ... i had bough the guts of two different MK4 cabinets over the years and decided to use on my builds. this includes the powesupply setup that is in MK4, Blitz 99 etc. so they are not true to the original in that regard.

The artwork is my own files that I printed it locally. I wanted to do a little higher quality than what was out there so I scanned and rebuilt the side art as well as the control box front and sides. I had NOS CPO and Marquee so I did not rebuild those.

I plan to eventually share these artwork files with the KLOV as I have with previous projects. just need to do a little prep n them before posting.

Awesome! I would love to be able to use these files to complete my conversion. I haven't bought any of the existing prints yet because I'm still far away from being able to work on this since my cabinets are currently in storage due to space constraints, but hopefully they won't be for too long!

BoostinHP has some great artwork. Got all his work on my machines. This is the restore I did last year.
