Now I've done it. I bought a happ competition joystick to replace an aging nba jam joystick. The competition joystick is just a hair thicker in width so I'd have to get the torx 15 security screws and all buttons off the CP to get between the plexi glass and wood to change the washer.. so I figure just for now I'll put the microswitches on the old joystick and put it back together again.

Except.. my joysticks that i've fiddled with are falling in. Don't get me wrong. I put the original pieces back together in order, and the reconstructed joystick wouldnt stand up on its own, so then I took the 1P joystick apart to make sure I got the same pieces in the right order, yep.. same order, okay.. so I put the little clip on the bottom of 1P joystick and now that one is "sunken" too. Wth?

What's the voodoo magic that makes these things stand tall?

The voodoo you speak of is likely a spring / e-clip... I would refer to this exploded view to hopefully get your stick back to the way it was... http://na.suzohapp.com/joysticks/competition_joy_e.htm

Figured it out, on these stock joysticks there's a plastic piece between the washer and the joystick harness that prevents the joystick from "falling in" as it appeared to be. When I pulled the joystick out, this little plastic piece fell off to the bottom of the hole that the washer covers, out of the way of the harness alignment.
