Anyone else pick this up? It's good to see this movie getting some appreciation, as corny as it may be. As far as DVDs go however, this one leaves a lot to be desired. The video quality on the disc is horrible, it's pretty much a straight transfer from the original 35MM print, including all the dirt, scratches, and emulsion wear, hell you can even see the original cue marks to signify the end of the reels from the original print. It's too bad that they didn't even try to clean it up a bit, but it's not like the movie looks that great in the first place, its dimly lit, and obviously shot on a shoestring budget. It's still goofy fun though, and a nice nostalgia trip.
Also included is a commentary track from the director Greydon Clark. The commentary track is pretty much a bore, Clark does have some (not many) interesting stories to tell about filming, but he talks is the slowest.....most.....monotone....voice....you....will....ever.....hear. He clearly has no idea about video games, as he mentions Nintendo cooperating with them in the making of the film, despite the fact that all the games that appear are Bally Midway games. Mostly though he just blathers on about the actors and his own history as a filmmaker, he really talks very little about the film itself. Most of what he does talk about is issues involved with filming a movie like this on such a low budget. Really though, this was a pretty bad commentary track, Greydon Clark erroneously believes we care more about hearing about himself than we do about the film. There's also a lot of dead spots where he stops talking for long stretches of time.
Also included in a taped interview with Greydon Clark where he just rehashes a lot of the same stuff from the commentary, and an original trailer that was clearly transferred directly from Youtube.
So overall I'm split on this one. I do enjoy the movie in spite of how bad it is, but this DVD sucks. There's literally nothing on this disc worth paying for, so unless you really love the film and want to see it again, I would either pass on this one, or at least wait until you can find it for less than $10.
