Hi,
I am just about finished with the vertical setup for my 60 in 1 and got a new joystick. It can be set for either 4 or 8 way control.

What is the best setting for general play with the 60 in 1?

Thanks,
Chris

Depends on what games you want to play with it. For the most part, a lot of the games on that board use 4 way controls : Dig Dug, Pac games, Donkey Kong, Burger Time, Mappy, Pengo, Crush Roller, Amidar, etc.

Some of the newer games like 1943, Time Pilot and Xevious really need an 8 way stick in order to be playable.

It's possible to play 4-way games with an 8-way stick, but sometimes it can be really tricky - you have to be pretty precise. For whatever reason BurgerTime seems to be one of the worst for this.

Really just a matter of which games you prefer.

I'll be honest, I love the 8-way in my multi. I think it's a happ competition style. I play a lot of the speed versions of the Pac-Man games, and I have no problems with control. A lot of people don't agree, but that's my opinion. I've used a micro 4-way Happ in another multi and hated it. Maybe leafs are the way to go?

i Have the leaf 4 way joystick in mine and I love it . Most o hte games work great with the 4way stick .As stated above there are a few that are a little harder to play but not that bad. I can play all the games pretty well with it . THere is a stick that you can change from a 4 way to and 8 way by lifting the stick and turning it clockwise to engage the style you want to use .Hope this help.PEACE!!

This is kind of on topic, and kind of not. I'm dealing with my old 60-in-1 cocktail I sold to a friend. Last time I powered it up before today, everything worked fine. Today, I removed a joystick from one side as it needs to be repaired/replaced, and now everything works, except that you cannot select a game to play. You can scroll through the list, you can hit a button and see previews, but you can't actually start the game.

Would this be because of some form of daisy chain with the wires, and the joystick now removed, that it's not completing the circut? I don't have pics at the moment, and the game is now at his house, so I can't just go and check it right away. When I tried going through it, nothing seemed loose, everything was accounted for from what I could tell. The only two differences is that 1.) joystick was removed and the ends left open. 2.) It moved from my house to his. It's the only thing I can think of, but I wanted to ask before heading back over there tomorrow.

On a side note, but still with the 60-in-1 board, how the hell do you set it to free play? I've read the short/brief manual over and over, and I'm not getting it....obviously. It says it's a dipswitch setting, but there's only one series of dipswitches on the board, and the manual refers to 3 different dipswitches.

Sorry Snarly, not trying to hijack a thread, but felt it was better posting here in a thread somewhat in the relm of what I was looking for.

In order to set it on freeplay, you need to go into the game service menu. You flip dip 4 on the PCB itself. There's an option for freeplay. You set it to freeplay by messing with the DIP menu (not to be confused with the dips on the PCB). To save your settings, you need to hit the P1 button. Turn the cab off, reset DIP 4 to it's original position then turn the game back on.

As far as being able to see the preview but not the game. In order to see previews you normally hit the jump button. Remember you need to hit the p1 button to play the game. Maybe your coin mech isn't functioning properly, and it's not registering a credit? It should say if you have a credit on the main menu. Maybe your P1 button isn't hooked up properly. Did you remove a wire from it by accident?

Anyway, I'd set it to freeplay and be done with it. Unless you NEED to have it coin up.

Got it set, thanks for the advice. Once the controller was back in, everything returned to normal, must be how it was wired.

Best all-around setup is a Sanwa JLF stick with octagonal restrictor. You will have to be creative mounting it to traditional happ mounts, but it's well worth the trouble, IMO.

WOW. I forgot I had a spare octagonal restrictor plate laying around, went and popped it into my 60 in 1, and am never looking back. :) I had the 4/8 way restrictor in 4-way mode which was excellent for the 4 way games but terrible for the 8 way games, as expected. The octagonal restrictor plate is the best of both worlds. I played Frogger, Ms pac, Congo Bongo and Pengo and had no missed/stuck movements like with a typical 8 way. Thanks for bringing this up!

THANK YOU for trying it. I argue for the JLF with OCTO everytime a thread like this comes up and NOBODY believes me. WHY WON'T THEY BELIEVE ME???!!!

Because people here hate Japanese sticks and they aren't a drop in replacement for "standard" US style sticks. Plus people hate change and playing with a restrictor plate isn't as "smooth" as playing with a Ms Pac style circular 4 way. I don't care about any of that, I want good 4 way control AND good 8 way control without messing with anything, and the Sanwa + octo definitely provides.
