Joystick black discs - who puts them above/below panel

I keep seeing pics of people putting the black disc on top of the control panel. In my opinion this just wears the panel out exponentially faster. The only benefit would be keeping some dirt out of the hole but you also cover up some of the games art.

Far as I remember BITD all the games had the disc mounted below the panel (except the Nintendo clear disc). Above the panel didn't appear until kits and of course quickie fix jobs.

So what's the consensus?

I vote for below the panel.

This seems to be partially, unintentionally, regional preference mixed with some CP's you're supposedly supposed to mount them one way or the other.

I always mount them on the outside though. Even on CP's where they are supposed to be mounted inside, it feels strange to me. Street Fighter cabs especially just feel screwed up to me with the disc on the inside.

I put mine under the cpo.
It was a bit of work on my Muti-Williams but well worth it.

Believe it or not many Op's switched to putting them on the outside as a safety factor.

I remember WalMart had mandated all videos with joysticks had to have them on the outside. This was to prevent some little kids fingers getting crunched. Apparently this happened in one store out west.

Under... Most sticks with plastic mounting plates have a recess in the top for clearance.
I can see the finger pinching thing being an issue, but they look hackey to me when they're on the top. They're always done that way on bad conversions.

Under. Dust washer over the CP reeks of ignorant cheap hack. And it ruins the CP artwork astonishingly quickly.

I prefer under. Putting it on top looks odd IMO, however I have done it just to see how I like it.

Were you using standard parts? The original joystick housing is recessed in order to allow the dust washer to sit on top of it.

I can't get it into my Jr. Pac-Man because I'm using a Happ stick, perhaps he drilled holes into the CP to use one. Most modern sticks AFAIK (Happ, Semitsu, Sanwa) are designed to go on top unless they have an S-plate.
