Hey guys, I just picked up a project Joust and it appears to have a Defender power supply. the input header for the transformer has 12 pins rather than 15. the part number on the board is 5773-09474-01.

First, what am I working with here, and second, if it is a defender PS, could it actually work in Joust?

Kirk, you run a restoration business.

The information you want is in the schematics in the manuals.

That being said, a defender linear board, if not equipped with an OVP shunt card, will provide no protection like the 2 piece joust linears have, as it is buit in on those 2 piece setups.

The 5773-09474-01, was also used in pinball machines
, the 15 pin connector is what connects to the harness to provide power to the rest of the boardset.

The defender williams brick transformer has 12 pins, The Joust xformer has a 15 pin connector

A replacement is available here : http://www.arcadeshop.com/i/892/williams-power-supply-conversion-kit.htm

It should be said that the replacement {switcher} can corrupt the cmos on Williams games, YellowDog had a write up on it here on klov. I would trust what he says.

This is what a joust style 2 piece linear looks like

But yes, the pinout is the exact same and can be used, Just make sure you are lining it up pin1 to pin1 or (YOU WILL NUKE UR SHIT)

Now transformer input wise... That is a different story Joust was a 15 pin and Defender is a 12 pin from the williams brick xformer

joust 15 pin style:
pin 13 = N/C
pin 14 = WHT-YEL 6.3vac
pin 15 = YEL 6.3vac

Those feed 4p3 connector to the coin door for the 6.3VAC rectified voltage to the coin door lights

So Yes it will work, No I would not use it like that. The Linear needs to be rebuilt if it has not.

POST THE PICS!!!

Thank you, I haven't touched the restoration business for quite a while due to other Military obligations. But I did do a comparison of schematics and it appears the main difference in the input is defender didn't use the 6 VAC like Joust does. I haven't worked on these boardsets yet, but I have enough background to do some fairly in depth troubleshooting, just looking for advice to get me in the right direction. I will be replacing the power supply.

From what I can tell, the game should still work with the defender supply, minus some of the coin door functions. The output voltages are what they should be. Despite that, I so have other issues that I will be troubleshooting. Thank you for your help, I will look into what YellowDog has written up.
