Hello,
I recently bought a Joust upright. I have read several things that can go wrong and this doesn't seem to fit anything I have read.

I have replaced the header on the power source board and the female molex connector from the header to the transformer.

I did have video but lost it. I was having a ram error (got that figured out as soon as the parts get here). Anyway the problem at hand is this:

When I power up the game, on the power supply board only LEDs 2 and 3 light up. I believe LED 1 must be to the video/cpu/ram board. On the video/cpu/ram board, my little numeric diagnostic led isn't lighting up, and as far as I can tell, the board is getting no power. This results in no signal to the monitor (which is getting power). Does anyone know what this could be, had problems similar or anything?

Again, I have replaced header and molex on the power supply board. I have also checked fuses. This problem was going on before I replaced the header and molex, they were scorched, so I thought they were the culprit causing this.

I really want to get this playable but am lost right now.

Led

That LED being out means the PS is not putting out the powere it is associated with. I think that one is the 5v line. There could be something shorted in the coin door causing it. Un plug a few things and see if it comes on, If not. You have a failed power supply.

I just tried unplugging the coin door harness, the marquee light, and the control panel. I still can't get LED 1 to light. The LED does very briefly light (but instantly shuts off).

EDIT: so a failed power supply means it's junk? Or is there a way to fix it?

PS

The PS are easy to rebuild on Williams games. Stick with an origional PS on those. Switchers cause random CMOS errors. The Monitor and marquee light are not powered from the PS they are AC. You are looking for something that is powered by 5v dc. Coin door, MPU, ROM board, sound board, stuff like that.

Glad you told me that on the switchers. I was thinking about getting one. So I suppose A rebuild kit is what I need then. Thanks for the help, I appreciate it!

The three LED's are indications regarding the power, but they are not 100% reliable. You need to pull the output power connector and meter the pins. The LED's will light when the power supply is putting out near the minimum rated voltages (1=+5V, 2=+12V, 3=-5V). They will also light when you are over that minimum voltage.

Also, they can burn out and they can have mechanical failures. The legs can break off from repeated bending.

Your power failure can be a simple as a blown fuse (you need to check continuity with a meter) or a bad fuse connection (the fuse holders can get corroded or bent).

If you try the rebuild kit and find that it still doesn't work right or would rather just get it done, there are several of us on the board that rebuild Williams power supplies.

Is there anyone you recommend? I am just about fed up with this. I am getting pretty bummed out right about now and think it may just be better to send it to somebody who knows what they are doing. All I wanna do is kill some pterodactyls ya know? :)

Yellowdog fixes them. I just sent my williams PS off to him this week.

O.K. that sounds good. I actually ordered a rebuild kit from Bob Roberts. I still may get in contact with Yellowdog about it though. I'll just have to see how I feel when the kit gets here.

Thanks,
Mark

Just PM me and I will send you details on cost, shipping address, etc. I try not to clutter these threads into sales pitches. If you have the rebuild kit, I will install it for you and verify that the board was actually fixed as part of the base price.

In case you are not familiar with the Private Message (PM) facility, just click on the members nickname and a menu will dropdown and you can select the "send a private message" entry.
