I recently picked up a Joust Arcade game, wont boot up and I was hoping to sell as is if in Central Texas if I can not easily repair it.

The power supply seems okay and is getting power to the main fuse (which is not blown). But there is no fuse in the F5 fuse spot. There is a small note saying blown F5 fuse and another note saying
+5VDC
@4.15 on cpu
cause RAM failure

- not sure what amp fuse it would take? or if this means a memory issue or what? Let me know if any ideas? I am going to post this question on the Technical help forum.

Thanks

Why not fix it? Williams games are the easiest games to troubleshoot and fix. Unless the power supply is missing or the PCB's are missing it's probably a really easy fix.

Joust is 100% dead - but I definitely would like to restore it. If you have any leads on a power supply that would work it, let me know.

I will try to pull the power supply out and check it so I know exactly what I am looking for.

sure its not one of the switches ? Is the main switch on ? Are all of the white interlock switches on ? Have you checked the fuses ? Then look for a burnt white plastic harness connector at the power supply, might be the harness not the supply itself.

Contact Yellowdog hes in Texas as well and he does williams power supplys.

Thanks

Hey guys. thanks for the quick responses and the good info. I have not checked fuses but will search them out and check - and will follow up with the contact provided if I still need a power supply.

Thanks tons. I update the post in a day or so after I check and let you know how it goes (I will feel pretty dumb - but very happy if it is just a fuse)

Send a private message to Perfidious on this forum - he's in Austin and could probably help you out - he's very knowledgeable with Williams.

I suspect a fuse or an interlock switch not being on since you get nothing. Once you replace/figure that out then you will probably find you have a bad power supply on top of that. You can rebuild it,have someone else rebuild it or put in a switching power supply.

I would suspect at that point you will will have 2 or 3 other issues in most cases. 1. Ribbon cable on Rom board will be brittle and cause problems. Replace it. 2.The battery holder will need to be replaced or at the very least cleaned and batteries replaced. 3. The monitor will need to be capped. It should have a WG4900 in it.

Sounds like from your original post you just want to flip the game so you may not want to do all those tings.

I have sold 2 Jousts in Austin for $500ea in the last 2 months so don't let anyone local or someone on here tell you it is worthless as they often try to do.

Joust Wont Powerup Update

Okay, the main fuse is in tact - and there is power to it - and wiring harness ok.

Fuse F5 was not in and there was a small note stating F5 fuse blown and another note stating:

+5VDC
@4.15 on cpu
cause RAM failure

I presume that if I put a fuse in F5 (and I am not sure what amp fuse it takes) that it would blow it.

Any ideas?

Verify what amp F5 is( i forgot). Replace it. power on the game and see what happens. If it blows it then we go from there. If it does not then we can move on to the PS.

The note about the +5v basicaly sez the +5v line was low at +4.15v. This will always result in a RAM error msg because the ram needs more voltage to function properly. The ram may or may not be bad, we do not know till we have the correct voltages present on the +5v line. Once we sort out the fuse you will most likely also have a ps problem but first things first...

hope this helps.

Update to Joust Wont Powerr Up

I updated the initial post at the Top of the page to specify the issue.

Basically, the F5 fuse is missing but power to the main fuse.

someone jumpered F5 or you have a switcher in there somewhere. Something aint right if you have +5v and no f5 fuse present...

Take a picture of the inside of the cabinet and post it...

Fuse F5 is a 7 amp slow blow. It is not uncommon to have ops jumper one input and to put a larger fuse in the remaining fuse holder. Pull fuse 4 and see what size it is. Chances are it is a 10 to 15 amp. Also flip the power supply over and check for any wires. The original power supply does not have any wires on the back side.

I agree pictures would be very useful.

I have tested and working power supply boards available as well as most of the other Williams boards if you need them.

Pic of Joust system board

Hey guys,

Here is a pic of the system board that did not have a fuse in F5. I put one in and now when I hit the reset button at the top behind monitor, (not the power button on the outside but inside the cab) I hear speaker trying to do something each time I hit reset.

Anyway, check the pic and thanks for all of your help

I think that header on top not having a cable attached means that they bypassed the power supply and hooked up a switcher.

Do you have a device that looks like the following power supply in your Joust?
