Just got a Joust today for $150. It powers up and says rom error 1. The board flashes 2-0-1 . All three power leds are lit. The game will go to the demo mode/booking keeping totals screens and coin up but as soon as the screen tries to go to the actual game playing screen either in the demo mode or by pressing start it crashes and goes to the rug pattern. If you try and do the sound test it just beeps one tone constantly. It has the green chips and I can see some of them have been replaced. I am TOTAL newbie with games and between this and my broken Robotron I would really like to get them fixed. Any ideas on what to do or should I just send the boards to one of the experts on here to have them test/fix them.

Thanks for any help

Pull all of the ROMs one at a time and reseat them all. You want to make sure that one of the legs didn't break off or get bent under when they were changed out by whomever.

Also check the ribbon cable from the ROM board to the MPU board. Same deal, pull it off and make sure none of the pins are bent.

If you decide to go that route, I have several tested working Joust ROM boards I will trade for your ROM board [+$$] as is. Follow Dokert's advice first.

I did everything dokert said and it still reads 2-0-1 although it did read zero for a little bit until it tries to go to the game screen then it crashes and reads 2-0-1. Which chip is it reffering to that is bad, can I pull that chip and swap it with another one to see if it changes codes? Also if I try to go to the self test screen it crashes as well.
Can I try my robotron Rom board in my Joust even know the joust has green chips and the robotron has yellow chips with some orange marker pen line on each one?
If I can't fix it the board is coming your way saltbreeze and I still need to send dokert my robo power supply. These are my only two games and neither one works so its killing me to look at them and not be able to play either one.

Thanks

That is indicating the ROM chip 1 is bad. Or the socket that ROM chip 1 is in is bad. If you can burn a new one, swap it out. You can't just swap a different one from the set in. The sockets map to specific memory addresses so it must be an exact match for the bad ROM in your set.

Since you are in CA there should be several KLOV members near you. One of them should be able to burn a replacement ROM for you. Or I can do it, but it will cost you a little for the chip plus postage. If you can get someone nearby you can cut out the waiting for the mail.

What about swapping in my robo rom board I know I won't be able to play it I just want to see if its good since my robo doesn't work? I have no problem sending you my board or money for a chip, I need to send a lot of stuff out.
Thanks

If you know that the Robo ROM board works, that will work to tell you that the rest of the system works. It still doesn't really solve the issue of whether it is the ROM chip, the socket or one of the logic chips on the Joust ROM board. It should get you past the ROM test issue and let you make sure the RAM and other functions on the MPU board work.

Ok I swapped the robo board in and it read 2 0 8 but the game plays and goes threw all the self check screens. Looks like both boards are coming your way Saltbreeze. Sounds lame but I was STOKED to see the robotron screen actually come up on the Joust and actually work. Hopefully with two fixed boards and a repaired robo power supply all the problems will be solved but I am sure it won't be that easy. Any idea where to get a new bezel and quality CPO for the joust besides AS?

THANKS KEN AND EVERYONE ELSE FOR THE HELP.

Decent ones come up on EBay periodically. As well as cheap crappy ones that will get you by until a good one comes along. Also with bezels, if you have an air brush and some testors paints you can touch up the backs of them and fill in small cracks quite easily.

THANKS KEN AND EVERYONE ELSE FOR THE HELP.

No problem, that's what we are here for.
