Joust Restoration Dujour

attachment.php

Ha ha DK is peeking from behind the Joust cab.

So I got the cabinet masked off again in the center and applied the first
of the 3 stencils on both sides.

My love with this paint died as it didnt cover the brown worth crap. Took a
lot of coats to get it solid and a lot of coats means trouble peeling off the
stencil (at least for me). I have a few areas I am going to need to mask off
and respray. I tried touching up with a brush but that just made a mess.
Seems this paint can only really be sprayed as the carrier will melt multiple
layers of paint if applied with a brush blending them. Basically the brown
started melting into the orange where I touched up with a brush, changing
the color.

Solution is to break out the vinyl masking tape.. remask that section
and respray after sanding smooth. So that's my project for the week.
I'll use my airbrush.

The one side looks pretty much perfect so you get pictures of that:)

Looks good man. I remember someone telling me in my MW thread that a thin layer of yellow put down before the orange made it cover better. Not sure if it would've helped you or not.

BTW, thanks for reminding me to order that Williams coin door sticker! It really does "finish" it.

That was me Jon.:)
I did that when I put down red over black since the red is more translucent than the yellow.
That was a tip from Rich @ TOG. Primer could also be used.
Malice why don't you use rattle cans for the stencil colors.
It goes on much lighter than a spray gun and no clean up.
I found they work great for the stencils. I used the 2X Rustoleum.

I wanted to try lacquers.. I mixed them so they matched what was on my
cab colorwise. I'll try another stencil layer before giving up on lacquers.
It been good up to this point.

Do you have an air brush?
That would probably be better than a regular gun and you could use the paint you already have.

Okay so I was able to fix up the stencil work.. took a couple tries.
I used up all my orange paint when spraying it initially so I had to
mix some more. Not being an exact science.. I was a shade or two off
and didnt realize it until I sprayed & pulled the mask off and saw the different shades.

Crap... So I mixed it lighter and got a "so dam close I cant tell the difference match" then
remasked and sprayed again. Now I am very happy with the results.

I'll give it over night to fully dry then I'll work on applying the second set of
stencils.

Starting to look like a Joust.

Got the cream layer done today. Much better coverage with the
lacquers this time and I used a lot less paint. I used my small detail
touchup gun this time. I'm guessing I wasnt atomizing enough with my big
hvlp.

1 more stencil to go!

Wohoo!

Joust is done! (being stenciled).

I couldnt wait once I peeled off the cream layer so I applied the
last stencil, masked everything off and sprayed the red in my garage
using my detail gun. Just finished up a few minutes ago.
I gotta say, I am using my detail gun from now on for stencil work.
I am getting a lot better coverage, it doesnt make a giant mess, its super
easy to clean. I'll still use the hvlp for painting whole sides
or priming.

Now I gotta put everything together.. Hopefully in the next couple weeks
I can bang the rest out. Lots more to do.

Hmm now that I think about it. I'm going to put this on the back burner
for a while since all the hard work is done.. move it into my basement
and assemble it over the winter when its freezing out.

I want to take advantage of what luke warm weather we have left
in NJ to get my Omega Race and Star Wars bondo'd and painted before
winter.

Then I will assemble all three iduring the winter months. The cabs will
be easier to get down there as well when stripped of all their parts.

So to be continued...

Looks awesome man- great work!

That looks fantastic! I've never used lacquers before, maybe I'll have to try them out.

One question - are you going to leave the copyright symbol out of the "W" logo?

Yea I'm not going to bother with the copyright. I covered it up on purpose.
I always thought it looked out of place on this cab. Probably do the same on
my Robotron cab as well when I get to painting it.

Looks soooo goood!

I just love working with lacquer

I had a bit of problems with the yellow on the Make Trax i did. Next time before i do yellow, i think i will shoot a pretty light coat of primer first and see if that helps.

I left it off of the Make Trax as well. It obviously wasn't part of the artists vision and stands out too much.

LOL- I left the circle out as well only because the circle on the one side was on the wrong side of the "W" (Phet cut out his own circles using a nickel). I did put the "R" sticker where it should be and I think it looks cool even without the circle.

You might be too late on that weather part. :D

Once again great job on this and I like how you included something that didn't quite work out and how you corrected it. No matter how many times you have done a paint job or whatever there will be a time or two where something doesn't come out right and like you said either live with it or fix it. I also like the 'fix it' option. :)
