Joust Restoration Dujour

$200 worth of paint later...

I made really good progress today. I mixed up all the lacquer paint to match
the cabinet. This is the first time I have ever really tried to mix and match
paint. What a complete pain in the ass. I wasted a ton of paint to end up
with 1 quart of each color I need. For those following me down the lacquer
path when restoring a joust...

1/2 blue + 1/2 orange + a ton of black = the dark choclate brown color of the cab.

Red base + bit of black = deep blood red color

Yellow base + some orange = tangarine color

The skin tone color was a NIGHTMARE to mix. I couldn't tell you how I
finally got close. Its a wierd combination of a white base + yellow + brown.
I never did get it 100% perfect but its close enough for me... probably 97%
there.

I dont think the colors were always perfectly the same from the factory.. The
tangarine I mixed up was a perfect match for the yellow/orange color of the
bird on mine but I see other jousts on the net with different shades of what I
would consider more yellow.

After matching the paint I stripped the cabinet sides and sanded down to
bare wood. Next up and sanding down the front/back/inside.

Make sure you use a good respirator and goggles when spraying lacquer.
I sprayed lacquer based primer on my Joust and man that shit burns the eyes.
I was in an enclosed booth but oil based and latex never burned like that shit.

Thats a good tip Jim. I'll be spraying outside but I'll be wearing a respirator
and goggles anyway. Mixing them made me a bit lightheaded.. I can imagine
what spraying them would do.

That will probably be ok then since I was spraying in an enclosed booth in our back yard.

Great job! With that skim coat, you're going all "Chip Foose" on that cab :)

Can't wait to see the finished product.

OldTymeToys recent stencil progress has inspired me to get off my ass
and make progress. I finished sanding down the entire cabinet,
added the leg levelers, removed everything non wood from the cabinet
and boxed up the external metal bits to go off to the powder coater. I
sandblasted the remaining metal bits to clean them up.

Next up.. Bondo! everyones favorite:) Uugh

Mike, if that is the Joust cab you got from me last year it looks amazing already. Please keep posting the updates.

OldTymeToys recent stencil progress has inspired me to get off my ass and make progress.

LOL- I'm glad I can be an inspiration to your project! But, as we discussed in my thread- you can't rush a nice restore! Looks great so far- can't wait to see it when you're stenciling

So I finally got off my ass and made some progress on my joust restore.
The impending cold weather and Cabsr4pimps sending back all the metal
parts nicely powder coated motivated me.

Well when we last left off I was planning on doing the bondo work. It took
pretty much all day to get the sides and the new bottom to line up nice
till I couldnt feel any difference. Super smooth. Noone will ever know the
bottom was replaced.. well until they look at the bottom of the cab:)

Tomorrow I plan on priming the cab and shooting the black color if I have
time.

Tune in tomorrow — same Bat-Time, same Bat-Channel.

The hardest part on restos like this is getting the sides and bondo to a perfect finish. Lots of work but well worth the effort. Looking really good so far, can't wait to see the paint.

I gave it one final sanding this morning with 220 grit and cut a new upper
back door out of 1/2" mdf. Can anyone give me a location for the lock hole?
I assume there was a metal plate on the back of the door to make the lock sturdy?
My joust was missing the upper back door.

I gotta say I am REALLY loving spraying with Lacquer paint. It went on so
smooth, covered well, no runs, and dried fully in about 15 mins. Great stuff. I
gotta find some place cheaper then pepboys to buy it though, 22 dollars a
quart. I ended up using 2 quarts of primer. I guess the wood was really dry.

I gotta go pumpkin picking with the family so sanding down the primer will
have to wait until one evening this week. Cant rush the sanding.
Smooth primer = sweet paint job.

Okay so pumpkin picking didnt take very long:) I was able to sand the cab
once more with 220 to get the primer prefectly smooth. Then I masked
the sides and sprayed the black on the front/top/back. Came out really nice
IMHO. Very smooth finish.

During the week I will mask off everything but the sides and prep for
spraying the brown. Thats when it will start to look like a joust:)

I can't rave enough about this lacquer paint. Sands easy, goes on easy,
excellent coverage, nice smooth finish. Only downside is cost.

Between the rain this week in the NE and the wind most of today, I wasnt
able to make any big progress until it got almost dark when the wind calmed
down.

I masked off the center section and sprayed the sides a nice choclate brown
that I mixed/matched to the original sides before I stripped them. I continue
to be impressed with this paint! Costs a lot but it makes this so easy. It went
on very smooth.

Oh I also found time this evening to put the upper and lower
coin doors back together. Cabsr4pimps did an excellent job powder
coating them. The Williams badge TOG created gives it a finished
look IMHO.

Tomorrow's supposedly to be windy so I dont think I'll try any stencil
work. I'll probably just remask the center section in the garage.

After I finish my Gyruss Joust is next on the list. I've had the Gyruss 6+ years and the Joust about 4 so it is time.

Very nice work so far, can't wait to see it done.
